Another month, another Ecom Leaders meet-up and another unique venue. Today we met at Trinity House, founded in 1514 as the official authority for lighthouses across the UK. Is there a better place to shine a light (...sorry I had to...) on how hard ecommerce leaders have it right now. The topic was 'Building High Performance In-House Teams', with industry pressures and employee retention recurring themes over breakfast. Key take-outs: 🧬 Hiring is hard! It's crazy to think you only get 2 hours to interview candidates who will go on to work over 2000 hours a year in your team. Creating hiring DNA and utilising an Interview Scorecard are ways to add an element of rationality to what often becomes an emotional decision. 👨🔬 The average marketers' lifespan in their current role is 18 months. However it can take 2 years for individuals to build their confidence and capability to allow them to truly add value to the company. One recommendation was to encourage specialisation, whether that's CRM, Social or Acquisition, which accelerates the speed at which new starters have a positive impact. 🚗 Daniel Pink's seminal book, Drive, talks about how to retain staff by focusing on giving employees three things; Purpose, Mastery and Autonomy. Whether you're in charge of setting a company culture, a team vision or motivating individuals, this framework will help you retain good people. Our thought leadership series continues with another key topic "enhancing the employee-customer connection" Its a topic I personally reflect on a lot, thinking about why I go to certain shops vs. ordering online/exploring other establishments. 9 times out of 10 I go back to the same places because of the experience I receive It can be the smallest things that make the biggest impact, welcoming customers when they enter, getting advice when trying to choose what to buy, or just having some good music playing creating a fun and inviting atmosphere.
