🎉 100 years ago, on 23 February 1924, the general cargo tramper Emma Mærsk left the Odense Steel Shipyard in Denmark. The vessel was to be the first of eight Maersk vessels named Emma, a name with a special story. The first Emma Mærsk from 1924, as well as the second from 1928, were named after Mrs. Emma Isbrandtsen, a sister of A.P. Møller’s mother. The last six Emma Mærsk have been named after A.P. Møller’s daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller. The eight vessels with the name Emma represent the major shipping segments of the A.P. Moller Group over time: One was a tramp vessel, four were crude oil tankers and one was a product tanker. Number five was a combined container and roll-on/roll-off vessel and the current Emma Mærsk was the world’s largest container vessel when launched in 2006🚢 “Shipping is full of traditions” – such was the first line in a 1985 article about “Six Emma Mærsk ships”. The sixth had just been named at the Odense Steel Shipyard, and it was an opportunity to tell the story of our tradition of using names related to the founding family on our vessels. Nearly 40 years later, we mark the 100th anniversary of the first Emma Mærsk💙 #Maerskheritage #anniversary #supplychain #globaltrade #Maersk

Erik Söderholm, Managing Director of the Port of Turku, believes that one of the port of Turku’s strengths in steel transports is the smoothly functioning collaboration between the Port, shipping companies and port operators. Steel is transported via the port of Turku on liner services, ships that carry only steel, and also in trailers and trucks onboard passenger ferries destined to Sweden. “At the annual level, we are talking about hundreds of thousands of tonnes. The figures have gone up, but there is still plenty of capacity available”, he says. He adds that the port of Turku is profiled for steel logistics, goods shipments, project shipments, and demanding special shipments; bulk items are not much transported via Turku. Boluda Corporación Marítima has continued its steady expansion programme with the acquisition of Finland’s Yxpila Hinaus-Bogsering (YHB), consolidating the Spanish towing giant’s presence in Northern Europe. The acquisition will see Boluda entering the Scandinavian market so it can serve its clients in the Gulf of Bothnia. It will add six tugs, five of which are ice-classed, to its fleet operating in the ports of Kokkola, Vaasa, Raahe and Kemi. Kokkola in particular has grown significantly in the last decade, becoming one of the largest facilities in Finland with significance for the mining industry alongside handling dry bulk, chemicals and timber cargoes. The move will add YHB’s experience of towing operations in the extreme conditions of the Baltic, where ice and low temperatures require the knowledge and expertise of the Finnish company’s crews to perform manoeuvres ‘safely and efficiently’. “This purchase is a further step in our consolidation in Northern Europe, a complex market where the experience and expertise of the crews are key to carry out towing and marine salvage operations in extreme conditions,” said Boluda president Vicente Boluda Fos. “In addition, we are opening the Scandinavian market, providing coverage to our customers in the northernmost part of the Baltic Sea.” Read the full story on Maritime Journal; https://lnkd.in/eA7f_6_A

Finnlines’ ro-ro vessel sails from Turku to Travemünde, Germany once a week. Key Account Manager Leena Seppola says that their steel transports are dominated by imports. “The majority of the steel we transport is currently shipped via Helsinki, because there are daily liner services available there. Turku complements these services; steel is delivered from the port of Turku by road e.g. to the west coast of Finland and in the direction of Tampere.” She adds that the current trend is that the customer’s request the steel to be delivered to their doorstep and want to avoid intermediate warehousing – this service is also available in Turku. “Trailer deliveries are also on the rise. When the steel can be loaded to a trailer already at the point of departure, there is no need for intermediate handling, and the shipment can be delivered to the destination as it is.” Read more about steel logistics: https://lnkd.in/dQWNxwXa

#ShippingNews #TESlogistics #FreightNews #Shipping #Freight Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry drydock expands at Zhoushan THE new 300,000 tonnes-class drydock, measuring 430 metres long and 120 metres wide with a depth of 12.5 metres, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, reports the UK Seatrade Maritime News. This drydock will have the capacity to accommodate the world's largest containerships, addressing the global shortage of repair facilities capable of handling such vessels. In addition to the new drydock, the shipyard will upgrade its No 7 dock facility to enhance its ship repair capabilities. Upon project completion, the shipyard's production capacity will increase, enabling the construction of eight vessels and the repair of 350 vessels annually. Situated in Zhoushan, a significant ship repair base in China, this expansion project will stimulate new business growth for the shipyard, supporting its transition towards new energy, advanced technology, efficiency, and higher value-added markets, according to Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry (Zhoushan). Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry operates nine shipyards with an annual shipbuilding capacity exceeding 7.5 million tonnes and can repair over 1,500 vessels annually.

We all know now, we all got crowns 👑 The latest Drewry report highlights big changes in the global terminal operator landscape, and Singapore is right at the center of it. PSA International held its top spot in 2023, handling a massive 62.6 million TEUs. They've retained the port crown! New players like Adani, AD Ports Group, and Hapag-Lloyd have shaken up the rankings, while others like SAAM Ports and Bolloré exited. Despite smaller operators' efforts, there’s still a huge gap of 30 million TEUs between the top seven and the rest. The top seven terminal operators now manage more than 40% of global port throughput on an equity-adjusted basis. Investment in capacity and sustainability is key, with PSA leading the charge. In order to reduce wait times, PSA has also reinforced its frontline capacity, commissioning new berths at Tuas Port, and reactivating berths and yard space at Keppel Terminal. As global trade evolves, Singapore remains a powerhouse in the industry.

VESSEL REVIEW: JAPAN MARINE UNITED CORPORATION (JMU) has handed over a new freight-only Ro-Ro vessel to compatriot shipping company Asuka Kisen for operation under charter with JFE Logistics Corporation. 'JFE Kokuryu' will be used to provide sea transport services for JFE Steel Corporation. As with its near-identical sister 'JFE Hakuryu', the vessel boasts a cargo deck that is capable of handling wheeled vehicles as well as palletised freight, allowing for efficient loading and unloading operations. JMU said the vessel is an improved variant of an earlier Ro-Ro series that boasted improved efficiency through the incorporation of a fully automated onboard cargo handling system with a side-mounted loading/unloading platform for use by heavy wheeled vehicles. Other key improvements include the installation of a second cargo deck to enable more palletised freight to be transported on each trip.
