✈ The aviation industry is facing a key challenge: how can we develop and successfully integrate clean, emission-free propulsion systems? A key problem is the lack of suitable test facilities to evaluate fossil-free technologies under real conditions. This is where the new project "FoFlu" by the ILK and the Institute of Aerospace Engineering (ILR) of Technische Universität Dresden comes in: An innovative research aircraft will turn the skies into a test track for emission-free propulsion systems. GE Open Fan Aero Engine Development (CFM RISE): Arjan Hegeman, general manager for future of flight technology at GE Aerospace stated; “We aim to do something our company has never achieved before — introduce a new jet engine that is 20 percent more fuel efficient than our most advanced commercial engines today. This represents a jump in technology development that usually takes multiple generations to achieve. Supercomputing helps make it possible.” Step 1. Supercomputing (simulating) the design and airframe integration. Step 2. Build the demonstrator powerplant, integrate the open fan to a yet to be announced airframe for testing. The engine will burn kerosene/ SAF.

The aerospace and defense industry has always prioritized the performance of their systems. #sustainability is increasingly becoming one of those KPIs. System operation obviously is a huge part of the equation, so alternative fuels and electrification might first come to mind. #materials is probably a more critical aspect than one might first assume. Not just from environmental impact, but in what technologies advanced materials enable. From lightweighting, to specialized manufacturing, or unique operating conditions, materials will play a key role in the different concepts under this award. Ansys Materials and others are involved in many of these efforts through consortiums such as MDMC(Material Data Management Consortium) and EMIT(Environmental Materials Information Technology) Consortium. Types: Jet Engines (e.g., turbofan, turbojet) Rocket Engines (used for spacecraft) Propeller-Driven Engines (piston or turboprop engines for smaller planes) Key Principle: Newton’s Third Law of Motion—every action has an equal and opposite reaction. 2. Jet Engine Technology Core Components: Compressor: Compresses incoming air to increase its pressure. Combustor: Burns fuel with compressed air to produce high-energy exhaust gases. Turbine: Extracts energy from exhaust gases to drive the compressor. Nozzle: Accelerates the exhaust gases to generate thrust. Efficiency: Modern engines optimize airflow and fuel combustion for maximum thrust and fuel efficiency. 3. Turbofan Engines Definition: A jet engine with a large fan at the front that drives a significant volume of air around (bypass) the engine core. Advantages: High efficiency for commercial aircraft. Quieter operation due to the large bypass ratio. Applications: Commercial airliners like Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. 4. Turbojet Engines Definition: A simpler jet engine design where all the air passes through the core. Advantages: High-speed performance. Disadvantages: Less fuel-efficient compared to turbofans. Applications: Military aircraft and supersonic planes. 5. Thermal Barrier Coatings Purpose: Protect engine components from extreme heat. Materials Used: Ceramic coatings such as yttria-stabilized zirconia. Function: Insulate the metal underneath and reduce heat transfer. 6. Super Alloys Definition: Heat-resistant metals used in high-temperature sections of engines. Examples: Nickel-based alloys. Properties: High-temperature strength. Resistance to oxidation and corrosion. 7. Film Cooling Definition: A cooling technique where a layer of cooler air is introduced to shield hot surfaces. Implementation: Small holes in turbine blades or nozzles release the cooling air. Benefit: Extends the lifespan of engine components. 8. Heat Resistance in Aviation Technology Challenge: Operating temperatures often exceed the melting point of metals. Turbomachinery test rig aims to accelerate propulsion innovation A new vertical axis test rig for the compressors, turbines and fans that will play a key role in the next-generation of aero-engines is set to boost propulsion research at the University of Cambridge’s Whittle Laboratory. Developed by UK-based Frewer Engineering in partnership with manufacturers the Hyde Group, the vertical test rig’s closed-loop system and vertical design pushes the boundaries of testing capabilities and will accelerate the development of more efficient and sustainable aircraft engines. Simon Apsley CMgr FIMechE states "The primary goal of the test rig is to accelerate the pace of innovation in aerospace propulsion. It currently takes up to 10 years to develop a new engine technology so it’s mature enough for deployment. The goal of the Whittle Laboratory is to significantly reduce the time it takes to develop technologies for more sustainable aviation". In 1958 the first definition of aerospace engineering appeared, considering the Earth’s atmosphere and the space above it as a single realm for development of flight vehicles. Today the more encompassing aerospace definition has commonly replaced the terms aeronautical engineering and astronautical engineering. The design of a flight vehicle demands a knowledge of many engineering disciplines. It is rare that one person takes on the entire task; instead, most companies have design teams specialized in the sciences of aerodynamics, propulsion systems, structural design, materials, avionics, and stability and control systems. No single design can optimize all of these sciences, but rather there exist compromised designs that incorporate the vehicle specifications, available technology, and economic feasibility. #snsinstitution #designthinking #designthinkers
