Phillip Boiselle, MD-- thanks for the post. I have found watching him and the other gymnasts (male and female) to be inspiring.
I have a daughter who made it to the highest levels of gymnastics-- the work, dedication, sacrifice, and ability to practice and compete through physical and mental pain is something that is remarkable and most spectators do not realize this.
They really are super human and most have put in way more than the magical 10,000 hours to become experts in their craft. Many in this sport reach that 10,000 hours of training by age 10 (not saying that is good, but it is reality).
But your post got me thinking about the "the Pommel Horse" competitor and how he has excelled by harnessing his strengths.
I wonder if our medical education and training system would allow for a "Pommel Horse MD?"
Getting accepted into medical school is difficult and requires applicants to be unique in various ways (life experiences, achievements, work etc..)--- but once they enter medical training their uniqueness is suppressed into a "one size fits all" training approach in medical school, residency, and fellowship (for some this is well over a decade).
When I work with medical student, resident or fellow-- I can not tell if in their pre-med school life they were engineers, entrepreneurs, nurses, EMTs, leaders of national organizations, business minded, or English scholars.... should I be able to pick out the "Pommel Horse trainee?"
I fear that our medical training would not and does not allow for a "Pommel Horse guy or gal."
I think that needs to change and we need to harness the very unique backgrounds of individuals entering medical school to be more innovative and help us improve healthcare. We should not force a square peg into a round hole.
The practice of medicine has changed dramatically over the past 5 decades. But I do not think our training or training requirements have really changed at the same pace or enough to face the challenges that future physicians will face.
We need to support and encourage our unique "Pommel Horse MDs" better.
