Have you ever wondered why the Princess Diaries franchise is so popular? With news of Princess Diaries 3 taking social media by storm, Princess Diaries fans are rolling out of the woodwork, shouting their enthusiasm from the rooftops. Don't get me wrong; I love the Princess Diaries franchise! But I have to wonder... what makes this story so successful that people are still thrilled about it after all this time? We can't discount the obvious. These stories have compelling plot-lines, relatable characters, and sweet themes. Throw some good marketing strategy on top, and it's no surprise that the movies have been so successful. But I believe that's only part of the story. A key element to the Princess Diaries franchise success is the design of each human heart. God created all humans with dignity, and He designed us to reign over creation (see Genesis 1:21, Psalm 8). Because of this, all of us have something deep within us that loves the idea of royalty. It's literally what we were made for! As Christians, we also believe that we have been adopted by the King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Romans 8:15-17). We were nobody, and we became royalty. Princess Mia's story thrills us because, in some small way, it's also our story. And we know the ending to this story as well as we know the ending to our favorite movies. One day, we will reign with Christ forever. This happy ending gives us courage to face each and every day because we carry hope in our hearts despite the brokenness in our world. So, the Princess Diaries franchise isn't just a success because of good marketing or well-designed characters. It tells the story that all we as humans want to hear: someone ordinary can become the royalty they were born to be. The movies also remind us that, like Princess Mia, believers will have the happiest of endings when we reign with Christ forever. Because of this, we can hold our heads high and keep moving forward. One day, we will become who we were meant to be. P.S. I go more in-depth about stories, plot lines, and biblical themes on the podcast I co-host, The Plot Thickens Podcast!
