Gather round my friends, for a fan analysis, as I fanalyze the AFL’s latest Gather Round. They called it a “Festival of Footy.” As a Carlton coach once put it, there were green shoots of potential. But if the feisty Bomber’s coach Brad Scott had been to the festivities, he’d have been screaming into two phones at once demanding more. Don’t get me wrong. I loved the family road trip to Adelaide for the footy. Especially because Carlton won. But as a festival, it never quite reached those same lofty heights as the time Angry Anderson drove out onto the ground in a Batmobile singing ‘Bound for Glory.’ There were plenty of queues for fans of all ages. You could queue up for half an hour to get your photo taken with the words, Oh What A Feeling. And it seemed like Maccas blew its budget on a food stand in the shape of fries. But like the scent of frying oil, a question lingered in the air – why couldn’t the sponsors get involved in a more meaningful way? If it is to become a festival of footy, why not be a celebration of our great game – its Indigenous roots, the legends, and historic nail-biting finishes? Why was there no representation from AFLW? And why not include the fans and reward them in a way that makes those that gathered want to gather again, and those that didn’t, wish they had? I guess it’s something to kick around for next time. There are some common parlance sayings that sport amplifies into something a little more quirky. The one below has become quite Aussie Rules footy-specific, and springboards off the antipodean ritual of valuing understatement and guarding against the growth of "tall poppies" which inevitably, of course, are there to be cut down. It's also probably steeped in a little cautionary superstition: don't invite a jinx by overstating your chances when on a good run of form. In terms of Australianness it helps, too, that (billy) "lid" is a word that stretches back to corked hats and campfires; a virtual onomatopoeiac for having a "constellationary" cuppa under the lux of the Crux (Southern Cross). And most convenient of all, Four'N Twenty pies happen to have a lid. Makes my job of manufacturing a connection between sport and product that little bit easier, eh? Oi !!! From our Founder, Christopher DeVore: I'll share the side of Third Assist here on LinkedIn you may not find on our website: Third Assist happened by accident. Back in 2013, I was a young guy fresh out of the University of Maryland. It was the summer and I was exploring an idea for a camping business which stemmed from an undergrad entrepreneurship class. In the process of looking for camping sporting goods manufacturers I stumbled upon a hockey gear manufacturer. Hockey wasn't originally my goal during this manufacturer search, but I spent my childhood in Alaska and played hockey through college, so this new contact piqued my interest. There was one product I always wished I had playing outdoors in Alaska as a kid, and that was hockey gloves that could keep my hands from going numb. Fast forward over a decade and I had the opportunity to create a sample for just this idea. The sample process was amusing, to say the least, but in the winter of 2013, we had created a pair that worked. I made a skeleton website, created a tongue-in-cheek name (Third Assist), and listed them for sale to see if anybody else had the same problem. I sold the first and only pair in December 2013. Website traffic would tell me enough people did have the same problem that I bought a small batch of insulated gloves for winter 2014. Then doubled the order in 2015. I repeated the process until 2018. I enjoyed that Third Assist celebrated pond hockey or "hockey at its roots", and in 2018 we were able to expand for the first time with raw hand-finished wood sticks. Then State Sweaters in 2020. More glove models in 2021. Historic hockey stick watches in 2023. And more new categories for Winter 24. Informally, Third Assist is a now decades-long art project where I work with a small team to make gear and products I'd just like to create for myself. Some of the best advice I've received is to build what you'd actually buy yourself. Fortunately, that formula has allowed Third Assist to continue growing and will hopefully continue on this track for another decade.
