Executive Office of the President will you answer the call of 50 U.S.-based organizations to say NO to #DeepSeaMining? 🌊 Today, 50 U.S.-based organizations submitted a sign-on letter led by Sustainable Ocean Alliance urgently calling on President Biden and the U.S. Government to support a moratorium or precautionary pause on deep-sea mining, domestically AND internationally. The letter, written and signed by a powerful coalition of 50 organizations from across the United States, emphasizes the harmful effects of deep-sea mining on critical ecosystems, fisheries, and the climate as a whole (in addition to the financial risk/uncertainty that comes with this destructive industry). In this letter, we urge President Biden and Vice President Harris to uptake the calls of the Indigenous and youth groups who oppose deep-sea mining and to add to the Biden Administration's legacy of positive policies for our planet. Recent discoveries of #freshwater sources beneath the #ocean surface have sparked interest in freshwater exploration, potentially making it a valuable commodity in the future. While the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (#UNCLOS) governs activities in oceanic areas beyond national jurisdiction, including mineral exploration, it lacks specific provisions for freshwater extraction. The #Geneva Conventions on the Law of the Sea, 1958, which some states adhere to instead of #UNCLOS, further complicates the regulatory landscape. However, given the #scarcity of freshwater and its potential as a resource, countries may expand exploration into these areas, raising legal and jurisdictional questions. India could play a leading role in shaping legislation to address these gaps and facilitate non-controversial exploration of freshwater resources in oceanic areas for the benefit of #humanity. #newsnuggetz #freshwaterUnderOcean https://lnkd.in/giAeM_qY
