Following on from the last post regarding the application process, here’s a great example of how it can be done in such a way that generates enthusiasm in those applying for the post. Great example of clear, realistic expectations. SOM would do well to eat a bit of humble pie and follow the example.

🛠️ How a Well-Crafted Portfolio Sets Young Architects Apart 🏛️ In an increasingly competitive job market, young architects must rely on more than just a degree to stand out. A well-crafted portfolio can be a game-changer, acting as your professional fingerprint in the architecture realm. 🎨✨ Your portfolio is more than a collection of projects; it's an opportunity to tell your story. It should reflect not only your technical skills but also your creative vision and problem-solving abilities. Highlighting unique projects and showcasing a diverse range of skills can make a significant difference. Think about incorporating: ✔️ Renderings that show your design ethos ✔️ Detailed floor plans and elevations ✔️ Conceptual sketches and models ✔️ Project timelines and your role in collaborative projects Take time to personalize each application. Tailor portfolios to align with the firm's ethos and recent projects. Research and include a short explanation about how your work complements their latest designs or vision. This personalized approach can set you apart from generic submissions. So next time you're applying for a position, remember: your portfolio isn't just a supplement to your resume—it's a powerful tool that can open doors. As a dual-role Architectural Designer at Rise Architecture and a Master of Architecture student at Boston Architectural College, I've realized that the knowledge I gain from work doesn't always seamlessly apply to my academic studies, and vice versa. This has been both challenging and enlightening. In the professional world, we are driven by client needs, project deadlines, and the practical application of designs, focusing on efficiency, collaboration, and industry standards. In academia, we explore theoretical frameworks, innovative design concepts, and historical and cultural contexts, sparking creativity and critical thinking. Balancing practical experience with academic study has taught me the importance of integrating theory with hands-on work. Understanding the theories behind practical work improves our skills, encourages creative thinking, and helps us take a comprehensive approach to architecture, combining practicality with innovation. For anyone juggling work and studies, I encourage embracing this duality as a strength to broaden your perspective, enhance your skills, and create designs that are both functional and visionary.
