It is estimated that 40% of women do not receive post-partum care. Lot's of prenatal checkups, pop that baby out, then get on with your new life including little sleep, new baby care, continued family care, return to employment, and ohbytheway, take care of yourself too. And don't get me started about the insufficient screening for pelvic floor disorders. Postpartum wellness checks are so important and should always include screening for pelvic floor disorders, which often falls by the wayside. Good study! https://lnkd.in/gG_2T8YW #APOPS #womenshealthempowerment #BelowtheWaist #TheBiggestSecretinWomensHealth

Understanding the Impacts of FASD Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) refers to the lifelong effects on the brain and body of individuals exposed to alcohol in the womb. It is preventable and with the right services and support, people with FASD can thrive. Individuals with FASD may experience challenges with: - Learning & memory - Attention - Social & motor skills - Physical health - Communication - Emotional regulation Everyone with FASD is unique, with strengths and areas needing support. While the exact number of people affected by FASD is unknown, it's estimated that up to 3% of children and youth in Canada have been diagnosed. FASD is caused by alcohol exposure during pregnancy. Alcohol can harm the developing brain and body, depending on factors like the amount consumed, timing during pregnancy, and the birthing parent's health and stress levels. Co-occurring Conditions: Over 400 other health conditions are commonly linked with FASD, affecting areas like behavior, attention, and development. Early and accurate diagnosis is key to improving outcomes and preventing challenges later in life. Cutaneous neurofibromas (cNFs) begin to appear during adolescents and have primarily been studied in adults with NF1. Little is known about how adolescents feel about cNFs...until now. I am excited to share this publication with the REiNS International Collaboration, where we assessed the perspectives of adolescents with NF1 and their caregivers regarding cNF morbidity, treatment options, and acceptable risks-benefits of treatment. https://lnkd.in/e-F46zhu #iamageneticcounselor #nf

Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) is increasingly recognized as a disorder in adult and pediatric populations. Still, we have a long way to go to be able to improve our identification of people with this disorder. Read my literature brief below about EoE and its recognition and diagnosis. Read the article: Race and Gender Influences the Presentation of Eosinophilic Esophagitis | Dysphagia (springer.com)

This is an article about FASD great for laypersons, published in June, 2024 in “Family Doctor” magazine. It may be a good resource to share with concerned family members, or with any non-healthcare practitioner contacts who need to understand the basics of living with the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure. https://lnkd.in/gaxKs-N9
