Investing in People at Place: The Key to Sustainable Ecosystem Restoration in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Page 5 in the Guardian last week The recent recognition of the Tākaka Hill Biodiversity Group Trust as a finalist for the 2024 Ministry of Primary Industries BioHeritage Challenge Community Award is a testament to the crucial role that community-led initiatives play in protecting and restoring the biodiversity of Aotearoa, New Zealand. It highlights the value of local knowledge and community connections in safeguarding ecosystems. The Trust's holistic approach to ecosystem restoration, including pest control, native plant propagation, predator trapping, restoration planting, and scientific research, showcases the impactful contributions of grassroots efforts to conservation. However, the sustainability of relying solely on volunteers for this work is a concern, emphasizing the need for adequate funding support. Investing in community groups like the Tākaka Hill Biodiversity Group Trust empowers them to continue their essential conservation work for the benefit of future generations. The Trust's 50-year strategy exemplifies the dedication and vision of local communities in preserving Aotearoa's biodiversity. It is crucial to recognize that sustainable ecosystem protection requires more than volunteer efforts and to prioritize supporting community-led initiatives with the necessary resources. The success of the Trust serves as an inspiring example for other communities in Aotearoa to follow suit.

The Next Door Neighbors magazine March issue (linked below) includes a piece about the invasive plant removal that several of us have been doing on the W&M campus and 30+ acres of Port Anne common land adjacent to environmentally critical College Creek (pp. 27-29). Most importantly, the issue contains several great profiles that highlight the importance of native plants in creating robust, healthy ecosystems, which are essential to all of us. We can all make a difference where we live. #W&M #William&Mary #plantnative

Are We Missing Our Moment to Restore What Was Lost? As the planets align in a pattern not seen since the 1750s, I can’t help but think about what this means for us today. Back then, Australia was being shaped in ways that left scars—both on the land and on the dreams of those who tried to tame it. In my travels across Australia, I’ve seen the remnants of these early efforts. Built with hope, now sit abandoned, their promises unfulfilled. But these settlers weren’t naive. They built in places where the land was once abundant, where cattle thrived, and resources were plentiful. Yet, over the next hundred years, something changed. The land, once fertile, no longer supported the dreams of those who settled on it. Now, as we enter this cycle of our solar system, I believe it’s a sign. It’s time for us to give back to the land and reconnect with it. Australia is a land full of potential, but since colonization, it feels like we’ve been out of sync with what it could be. The Gamilaraay people, who have long looked to the stars for guidance, remind us that our connection to the cosmos and our ancestors is profound. As they’ve taught us, the sky guides us, reflecting our connection to those who came before us. By nurturing the land, we give it the chance to thrive again, and in doing so, we also heal ourselves. We are deeply connected to this earth, and as we care for it, it will care for us in return. The time is right for change, for new leadership, and for us to start a new chapter in Australia’s story—one that honors and sustains the land for generations to come. So, how do we ensure that we don’t let this moment slip away? How do we come together to take the practical steps needed to restore our land and, in turn, rejuvenate our communities? Connecting the younger generations with the land is key. The first step is commitment, the next step is action. Let’s start the conversation—what steps can we take today to begin this journey together?
