Don’t let prepositions trip you up when it comes to subject-verb agreement. That can happen when a prepositional phrase comes between your subject and verb. When choosing your verb, ignore the prepositional phrase, and select the verb form that agrees with your subject regardless of anything else. 👍 A group of children is coming to the museum. 👎 A group of children are coming to the museum. 👍 Loads of laundry are piling up. 👎 Loads of laundry is piling up. #grammar #writing

Choosing to write a book which makes others uncomfortable takes courage and a strength that not many people have. Real life problems are often sugar coated in fiction, Those who have 'a stage' often choose to hide behind business books, But the books which make the real difference, and stand the test of time, are the ones our leader Dawn Bates writers and helps others to write. "Writing is a way of finding a counter-language, that Hooks calls a "space of refusal" where we say no to the language of the colonisers and oppressors and find a language to name the repression. Once we silence these counter-narratives then we silence the language of resistance." This article from The Bookseller speaks to the activism so needed in the world of literature today, which the Arts Council England are not so keen on. Some call activism 'advocacy', some call it 'creating social change', whilst others call it 'innovation', but the fact still remains, it is the bold and the brave who created a better world by challenging the narratives and comfort zones of others. Will you be the next author Dawn world with and the next book we publish? Whilst you think about it, have a read of this article. It might be the tipping point you need! https://lnkd.in/eCwAbiVd #authoractivist #activismbypen #authorcoach #intelligentactivism #time2callDawn #theactivistschoice

Carol Off (CBC journalist) wrote a column in the weekend Globe and Mail with the title “What we lose when words lose their meaning”. She talks about two people who tracked the changes how words were used in their society that led to tragedy. Gordana Knezevic noticed a change in Bosnia and then experienced the horrors of the war and ethnic cleansing that followed. I will let her tell you in own words about the next person. “In the early 1930s, Victor Klemperer, a German Jewish professor of French literature living in Dresden, began to document in his journals the shifting language around him, as much of it turned dogmatic and poisonous. There were many early signs that indicated the direction in which Adolf Hitler was taking Germany, but Klemperer decided to make a kind of thesaurus of the evolving dialect of the German people. The book he published after the war, The Language of the Third Reich, reveals the role that words play in transforming people and moulding their beliefs.” I was in a meeting once where we reached consensus on a problem we solved. I then made the mistake asking what people meant by one phrase in the agreed solution. The consensus collapsed. Carol Orff warns “We have arrived at a point where every word needs to count – a kind of linguistic “all hands on deck.” Our words need to exact in meaning if we are to resolve issues at work or at home. However, we need to be willing to talk to each other … “Our inability to talk to each other isn’t an accident; it’s the objective of those who can only get what they want if they turn us into adversaries. It’s a crucial first step in a transition toward antidemocratic and illiberal governments. Turning us against each other creates opportunities for demagoguery.” https://lnkd.in/gQSBy-4M

Recently, we were joined by multi-award-winning author and journalist Bri Lee in conversation with literary commentator and festival moderator Nicole Abadee for the launch of Bri's debut novel, 'The Work'. During the discussion, Nicole posed the question: "Can you separate the art from the artist?" In her response, Bri Lee explored why this question persists and remains fascinating. She highlighted that there is no single answer that applies universally, emphasising the complexity and variability across different industries, art forms, and individual artists. Bri pointed out that every decade has seen variations of this debate, and it endures because each situation is unique. Bri noted that some artists can be judged separately from their work, while others cannot, especially when their problematic behaviour directly informs their art. She also stressed the significant difference between solo creative projects and collaborative works. How do you think audiences should navigate their consumption of art when confronted with these ethical dilemmas? Comment below. Allen & Unwin #authorconversations #booklaunch #literarydiscussions
