Last July, the Fab City Foundation, in collaboration with Ibero IDIT Puebla and the Fab Foundation, hosted the third annual Fab City Challenge, this year in Mexico. This inspiring event brought together over 40 innovators from 25+ countries to tackle 7 unique challenges across 6 regions of Mexico. 🇲🇽 For 10 days, participants worked alongside local hosts and communities to explore, ideate, prototype, test, and refine solutions to some of Mexico’s most pressing challenges, such as water scarcity and biodiversity loss. 🌱 This short film captures the essence of those 10 days—highlighting the experiences of international participants, local collaborators, and communities. I’ll admit - I got a bit fired up today! And in what great company! I was a panelist in "How to Build Market Success for Research Institutes and Science Centres?" at the 13th European Forum for Marketing of Scientific and Research Organizations, hosted by Łukasiewicz - ILOT. Beata Lubos, Phd: You once called the Porozumienie Spółek Celowych Network "the real-deal transfer of Polish science". What universal, proven collaboration models do you have between research institutions and the private sector? Here’s what I shared: 1. Technology transfer units must be involved throughout the entire research process - from sparking new research directions and brainstorming ideas to testing interim results and finally launching products on the market together. Let’s get this straight! 2. Always come prepared for business meetings and ready to pivot entirely if needed. We need to understand the business perspective and be ready to support their growth. Start with ten ideas for collaboration and aim to walk out with a project - sometimes completely different from what we originally came up with. 3. Truly join forces when going to market, not just talk about it! Let’s show both local and international businesses that they’re tapping into the full innovation potential of the Polish Science = Porozumienie Spółek Celowych, PACTT - Porozumienie Akademickich Centrów Transferu Technologii, Polska Akademia Nauk and Sieć Badawcza Łukasiewicz. Over dinner at Pharaoh on Robin’s birthday with ABL Group’s Maria Dragoumerli and Vangelis Sallis an idea for a different kind of industry gathering took shape. Networking? Yes - but with a twist. Less about quick, utilitarian exchanges, more about making space for conversations to wander into unexpected territory. Chatham House rules: Thoughts and insights can be shared beyond the evening, but should never attributed. This allows everyone to explore ideas more freely, separate from official company positions. Everyone is welcome. Maybe it's a wine tasting at a taverna like Mavros Gatos - one long table, the kind where you never know who you'll find yourself next to, and halfway through the evening, everyone shifts. We all know the magic of ending up seated next to someone that kicks a door wide open for you. Let's try to be conduits for that. My good friend, Theodosis Stamatellos recently wrote something in Maritime Economies about #shipping's younger generation of tech-savvy hustlers that also underlined the need for this: they're not just seeking mentorship, but real engagement. More time in the ring, a little less analysis. He emphasized how their openness to diverse viewpoints and hunger for continuous learning often sparks innovation - especially when they have the right spaces to engage freely with seasoned professionals. As he points out, with shipping facing everything from #decarbonization to digital transformation, creating these spaces for open exchange isn't just nice to have - it's essential. The more perspectives in the room, the more different viewpoints collide, and the better chance we have to avoid the echo chambers that will keep us from evolving. These gatherings will aim to create more of these moments, not replace any of the opportunities that currently exist - and both for the younger professionals who need as many chances as possible to practice the art of improvisation, but also for #maritime industry veterans to stay agile by leaning into unexpected exchanges, making the whole dance richer for everyone involved.
