Yesterday over on my Instagram I shared a project which was inspired by the new RSA competition brief called 'Made Natural' - 'How might we create sustainable, nature based solutions which use trees to protect the environment and strengthen communities'
With research examining communities, trees in urban areas and viewing indigenous knowledge I knew that harnessing infrastructure which already existed, and located though out our urban areas to gain maximum exposure was the route to take. Advertising boards was my touchpoint. Tree planting alone is not enough to change our current climate crisis.
A study in 2020 on the back of the Covid pandemic found people were using webcams to feel connected and nostalgic over locations they had previously gone, or to visit new locations. 'Webcam travel links to an increased likelihood to physically visit these sites in the future' (David Jarratt) - can we use this research to also encourage us to change our everyday habits by bringing the world closer to our daily lives?
The concept of 'Rooting' is inspired by using a selling strategy to catch us off guard in our usual routines to make us reflect and question. Using the technology of livestreaming through these travel webcams on urban billboards, we can not only present the beauty of our planet, but the direct destruction we cause through our actions.
It may also be a way to create cross-global communities and initiatives by seeing real-time action with particular locations, could a team in Oxford team with groups in Laos and view these efforts through their own towns billboards?
By seeing these distance places in our local location, we can bring crisis and positive action to the forefront of our attention, promoting new behaviours and habits.
Just a quick little project to keep me going, which I really enjoyed to manifest! - see the full project here -
