🌟 Embracing Change: My Journey from Communications to Graphic Design and Photography 📸 You know what? I majored in Communications, not graphic design. I was intent on becoming an advertising art director but I took some design classes so that I could lay out my concepts Quark XPress (I went to school in the 90s' 😅 ) and Adobe Illustrator. Unfortunately, as soon as I graduated, all of my job prospects disappeared due to the dot-com bubble burst. Luckily I had a portfolio that showcased my design/advertising abilities which landed me a freelance job at a small firm in Brentwood, CA called Runyon Design. Richard Runyon, the owner, was the famed designer responsible for some of the earlier iconic logos for Federal Express, Betty Crocker, and Hansen drinks. Under Richard, I created layouts for several clients, relying on my ability from my background in advertising to balance out art and copy. The experience was great, but it was not how I had envisioned my career. The work was unsteady, so I worked some nights and weekends at the OC Register newspaper as a digital lab technician and product photographer to make ends meet. The head of the photography department offered me a full-time job as a Photoshop artist and retoucher, but I was supposed to be in San Francisco or New York, coming up with clever ads for Volkswagen while sporting thick, black-framed glasses and wearing a turtle neck. So I politely declined and decided it was time to move to the Big Apple. Then a week before my flight I arrive at the OC Register to find everyone running and in disarray. I look at the ceiling-mounted television to see a plane hitting the Twin Towers. Advertising career? Done. Graphic Design and Photography career? I embraced it. While I still harbor some nostalgia for the path not taken, I've come to appreciate the twists and turns that have shaped my journey over the past twenty years. Today, I am reminded that resilience and adaptability are key in all parts of our lives, not just careers.
