🎨 The £60M Creative Industries Debate: Are We Asking the Right Questions? Last week's announcement of £60 million to 'turbo-boost' the Creative Industries sparked numerous conversations in my network. Today, a general debate will be taking place in the House of Commons chamber on the Creative Industries. https://lnkd.in/gCn4JMmg But what will they be debating. 🤔 The thing that really strikes me is that the Creative Industry in the UK only received official industry status in 2019. [DCMS was created in 1997, but Creative UK was only really established between 2017 - 2019]. So even though art is as old as time, as an industry it’s very new. It hasn't and doesn't receive any meaningful investment even though it contributes £108 billion to the UK economy and accounts for 7.1% of the jobs. The Challenge: Unlike Real Estate (build house, sell house) or Manufacturing (make stuff, sell stuff), the Creative Industries are beautifully complex. Musical Theatre operates differently from Fashion. Gaming is worlds apart from Architecture. Also Software and IT are considered as sector of the Creative Industries..... As a lot of you know, I’ve been supporting creative entrepreneurs for nearly 20 years and I believe we really need to dig deeper. 🎯 What Makes a Functioning Creative Industry? After years of research and working with creatives, here's what come to me as needed: 1. True Recognition: Beyond lip service 2. Understanding of the Creative Process: From training to distribution 3. Devolved Funding: Not just distributed by the big players 4. Space for Innovation: Room to generate ideas and make mistakes 5. Streamlined Business Models: Clear paths to sustainability 6. Strong Education-Industry Links: Building future talent 7. Diverse Funding Streams: Beyond traditional sources 8. Real IP Protection: Safeguarding creativity 9. Business Training: Proper incubation and acceleration ❓ The Real Question: Should we be debating how to distribute £60M, or should we be discussing how to fundamentally restructure support for an industry that turns imagination into economic growth? In the arts and culture sector, aligning more transparently with existing definitions can optimize access to tax credits. Notably, the Creative Industries Federation reports that many cultural enterprises, particularly SMEs, face challenges in adequately safeguarding and maximizing the value of their intellectual property. On a broader scale, the 2018 Creative Industries Sector Deal committed an estimated £58 million for immersive technologies, with a target to double the UK’s global creative immersive market share by 2025. Additionally, this deal allocated funds for a national Policy Evidence Centre, fostering partnerships between universities and creative businesses nationwide. The concentration of creative industries in big cities is a reality in most countries.
