Do it for the process as much as the result. One of my favorite Gary Vee themes that I can again vouch for from experience. People have asked "how amazing was it when you opened up the box and actually saw the real thing?" "Was it mind blowing to have your book in your hands?" Don't get me wrong, it was definitely cool. But it also was a lower key feeling than anticipated. By the time the book landed, I knew every square inch of it and every detail inside and out. That knowledge came from throwing my energy into each step and decision along the way instead of looking ahead to the finish line. Choosing the illustrators. The book's size. The cover style. The paper. The fonts. The metadata. Who I wanted to ask for endorsements. The back cover content. The design elements and colors for 20 different logos. The fine details that took each initial sketch to a finished illustration. The layout of each page. The final wordsmithing choices. Each one of the above was a chance to positively influence the product rather than something to get out of the way and check off the list. So, yeah, embrace the process. And trust the fabulous team around you. If you can do those things, you know you're doing work you love.

Top Tips for Children's Book Authors! ALWAYS book a sample illustration with your preferred illustrator BEFORE booking them for your full book project! Why? There are many reasons to book a sample for your project, but here are my top 3 1. The illustrator might have a beautiful style, but it might not match your vision for the story. If you end up unhappy with how the illustration looks, its much better to know after 1 page! 2. You might not get on with the illustrator or like how they communicate with you. 3. It allows you to check that the illustrations are bespoke for your project and unique to you! You don't want to get stuck with someone who uses ai imagery or clipart illustration if you are paying for unique work! 💡💡BONUS TIP!💡💡 Make a change to your sample and see how your illustrator reacts! Do they share sketches that you are able to make changes to? Do they get angry with you? Or do they ignore your suggestions and refuse to change their artwork?
