The much-coveted four-day workweek is back in the news this month after Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced new legislation and held a congressional hearing calling for a 32-hour national workweek. The concept has gained momentum in recent years, spurred on by a post-pandemic society grappling with its toxic relationship with work. Calls for a shorter workweek aren't new by any means — former US President Richard Nixon was an advocate at one point — but past attempts to implement it have failed. This time, however, may be different. Researchers who study and advocate for the four-day workweek say the world is on the precipice of seeing flexible schedules normalized in the next five to 10 years. Some very interesting data in here, including: 🔸 The average worker now signs off an hour earlier on Fridays, at 4:03 p.m., according to an analysis of 75,000 workers across North America by ActivTrak. 🔹 In many U.S. cities, Friday-morning rush hour is one of the least congested times to drive during the workweek, even less so than in 2019, according to TomTom. 🔸 Weekly spending at restaurants used to peak at Friday lunchtime in 2019. That peak has since shifted to Saturday brunch, according to data from Square. Personally - I oftentimes use Friday as a heads-down kind of day to catch up on individual work projects, as referenced in this article! 😀 What about you?
