How can dancing in the street make you more resilient? Recently, I joined a couple of musician friends to perform in a busy downtown street. It was a humbling, fun and surprising experience that brought to life things we can all do to practice resilience: 1- Connect to your roots: I’ve heard flamenco masters share stories of the time when they would hang out in busy streets, waiting for people to pass by and hire them to perform in private events. Dancing in the street made me feel part of this great lineage. When you think back to the leaders who came before you, and contributed to make your company / your career what it is today, you realize that you are not alone. You realize that you actually have more than you thought you had to succeed, and very little to lose. 2- Go lean: if you can survive doing a turn on a wobbly piece of wood that is sliding over cobblestones, you can do anything! Go back to basics, make do with very little. Your skills will be sharper, and you will learn to recover from and thrive in adversity. 3- Make it real: a dance studio (or an office, offsite, workshop) is a great place to practice in a controlled environment, but nothing beats contact with real life and real humans. The street is a realistic simulation of a performance. We learn best and become more resilient when we have to solve real problems, not imaginary ones. If you want to work on being more resilient: connect to your roots, go lean and make it real. #dancingthroughchange

Helping leaders drive breakthrough results through strategic adaptability. Strategy Execution | Disruptive Facilitation | Adaptability Assessment and Coaching
40 years ago 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆, the game changed for ever! Torvill and Dean transformed Ice Dancing in this moment. It was a considerable risk to deviate from the traditional ballroom conventions. But during their preparations, they threw out the planned 42nd street-based routine and risked it all on: Being Different They had various problems to solve; for example, • The music lasted 4 mins 28 seconds • But the rules only allowed 4 mins 10 seconds • The rules said that the clock starts when the blades touch the ice The famous kneeling (18 seconds of) "Snake Charming" start was exploiting a loophole to make the music work. Looking closely, you will see they keep their blades off the ice. The risks paid off. The nation and the world were in awe at what they just saw! So were the judges. As you look to your future and consider how to adapt: Don't ask, "How can I be better?" Ask, "How can I be different?" If the answer scares and challenges you, you are on the right path! #adaptability #strategy #No4thFloor

Story in today's The Sydney Morning Herald highlighting the challenges ahead for our #arts8 training organisations to maintain world class standards into the future. Susan Templeman says "They absolutely need funding. In the 2022-23 budget, we made stopgap commitments to get them through tough times while the government undertook a review. These organisations have been neglected for the best part of a decade. In the same way as the national collecting institutions needed funding security, these training institutions cannot go from year to year with top-up funding. They need to roll out training, and without them we will struggle to develop the nations workforce." Whether it's a trapeze or a trumpet, we are the engine room that keeps our sector going and, with the appropriate support, growing. With the #Oscars making headlines around the world today, it's worth noting Australian Film Television and Radio School and National Institute of Dramatic Art alumni have collected 16 Oscars between them over the years. AFTRS screenwriter Tony McNamara is nominated today for his screenplay, 'Poor Things'. Here at the Flying Fruit Fly Circus we have just announced a global talent partnership with Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group. We are passionate, imaginative and resourceful, but emergency funding and band-aid measures don't allow us to do the long-term planning that is so critical to continuing our support of Australian culture.
