This #NationalChildsDay we want to share the impact of the Systems of Care framework: 👉 Improvements in child functioning; 👉 Reductions in internalizing and externalizing symptoms; 👉 Decreases in suicide attempts by 81%; 👉 Decreases in unlawful activities by 48%; 👉 Increases in school attendance by 18%; and 👉 Increases in the proportion of children receiving C grades or better by 28%. Navigating Medi-Cal to access vital developmental services for a child is often an overwhelming journey for families, marked by provider network inadequacies, long wait times, and a complicated early intervention delivery system. These challenges make it near impossible for families to access needed services in a timely matter, delaying critical early intervention and creating unnecessary stress and potential setbacks in a child's development. “How to Let Go When You’re Dying” – Online – Thursday, April 4, 2024 (2 pm – 3:30 pm central time) This is available for 1.5 CEUs through the Continuing Education Institute of Illinois. I’d also welcome caregivers, patients, and curious participants. Please join us! Each session also includes an “Ask a Doula” Q&A at the end where I’ll answer all your questions. We will examine impermanence and the ways that clinging to anything leads to suffering. This program will delve into some of the ways we can let go that will help us achieve a more peaceful life and death. Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to: ∙ Understand the opportunities life gives us to let go in small ways. ∙ Recognize the importance of trusting ourselves and remaining open to whatever is supposed to happen. ∙ Recognize, demonstrate, and understand 10 things we can do to let go every day. ∙ Learn about how these practices benefit our lives and deaths. ∙ Recognize the ways that death doulas, care teams, and loved ones use these practices to help people let go at the end of life. Families are confused by palliative care because we (the collective we) keep referring to it as end-of-life care, and the messaging is 95% about planning for death instead of the quality of LIFE being lived. The quotable Shawshank Redemption rings loudly: "Get busy living, or get busy dying." The term palliative is not approachable for understanding... I'd love to see a rebrand to medically-complex care, or something to that effect. Painting all kids on the severe neurological impact spectrum as imminently dying, when many of them live long, high-quality lives does a disservice to their dignity and personhood. We must be careful with the intention and unintended impact of messaging if we want to build a better comprehensive approach to caring for medically complex children and their families. Care planning, considerations for advanced directives, succession planning, and financial planning are all very important considerations, but let's not lose focus of the terms LIVING and LIFE. #PediatricPalliativeCare #SoapboxoftheDay #QualityofLife

Research shows that people experiencing domestic and family violence (DFV) tend to speak about their situation to family or friends first, and then their GP. Women are twice as likely to disclose DFV and abuse if they’re asked by their GP or nurse in the general practice. That’s why – in partnership with Wentworth Healthcare Limited, provider of the Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network – we offer free training to better equip GPs and health professionals to recognise DFV in their patients, respond safely to disclosures, and refer them to appropriate services in their area. Our DFV Linker service provides free, safe and confidential support to anyone experiencing DFV in the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, Lithgow and Penrith Regions, via their local GP or health professional. To access the service, anyone can book an appointment with their GP and let them know they’d like a referral to DFV Linker.
