Bank – tech / fintech partnerships are unlocking capabilities historically unseen in the economy, evidenced by the growth of real-time payments, the increased access to and use of customer data and the expansion of consumer choice within digital and traditional payment methods. A key question arises: how can these historically distinct (sometimes rival) entities create exceptional value together? Capital One, Stripe and Adyen recently provided an answer through their product partnership aimed at fraud reduction. Each one of these companies was separately seeking to stop fraud but did not have a product to do so alone. They saw the “better together story” and how partnering would create a win-win-win-win outcome (the fourth being the merchants). Competitive dynamics are not always what’s best for customers and it’s crucial to assess when the path to improving customer’s journey and experience includes partnerships. Klarna is close to profitability as it prepares for an initial public offering, with the buy now, pay later lender reporting a significant reduction in pretax losses to roughly $180,000 in the first nine months of the year, down from around $161 million the previous year. The Stockholm-based fintech saw a 23% increase in total revenue, reaching $1.8 million.

Venmo has a great brand, but product has lanquised for a decade+ after PayPal acquistion. Venmo just announced recurring payments. on its own, not that big of a deal, but if it represents and new more ambitious PayPal / Venmo, thats exciting. Also, can they actually challenge Zelle? Simon Taylor and I had a really fun discussion for what's next in P2P payments. One of the hard parts in P2P is monetization. Simon's team monetize demand (charge consumers / demand a subscription), I lean more team supply (charge businesses transaction fees / create advertising networks or rewards). Fun discussion.
