This makes no sense. One one hand, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen acknowledges the housing market is dire for first-time homebuyers. On the other hand, she's proposing nonbanks have additional capital requirements and scrutiny to play in the mortgage space. Speaking this past Friday to the Financial Stability Oversight Counsil, Yellen pointed out that unlike traditional banks, nonbank mortgage companies are heavily exposed to swings in the mortgage market, depend on funding that can dry up during times of stress, and don’t have stable deposits to rely on as a safety net. While the focus was largely on servicers, there was plenty in there about the industry as a whole. As a result of her comments, CNN posted an article entitled: "Mortgage companies could intensify the next recession." (https://lnkd.in/eQPtYUuQ) Really? How good were those "stable deposits" when the government had to step in and FDIC insure our accounts up to $250,000 during the financial crisis? The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) closed 465 failed banks from 2008 to 2012. Unlike nonbanks, depositories can and have jumped out of the mortgage market over the years on a whim, mostly when conditions didn't bolster their coffers enough, or when they felt regulation was too punitive. And they've historically shown little desire in attacking the underserved, which by the way, just keep getting kicked more and more to the curb (the National Association of REALTORS® settlement hurts them too). In response to Yellen's comments, Mortgage Bankers Association President Robert Broeksmit released this statement: https://lnkd.in/eDmD_Nis. Are we "nonbank" lenders the only ones who know that the more onerous and costly regulation becomes, the more consumers end up paying in the end? What a vicious cycle. I bet former Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency Mark Calabria is dead set against the idea of setting up a backstop for nonbanks should they fail (another one of the things Yellen proposed). Guarantee he'd say let the process unfold naturally. And to that point, isn't that working? There have been hundreds of mergers, acquisitions and failures among nonbanks the past 36 months, yet the business keeps plowing along. Leave it alone. Leave us alone. If banks don't want to be in the game, and nonbanks are pushed out, who will provide the more than $5 trillion in financing the MBA is projecting between today and the end of 2026? Three months ago, my friend Diego Sanchez took exception when a post of mine read: "the mortgage industry is in the line of fire once again." Back then, I was pointing to the Biden administration's proposed housing reform and the CFPB's renewed scrutiny of mortgage fees. A lot has happened since then. Wonder what he'd say now.

The client spoke to his Chase de Vere Private wealth advisor about drawing his pension which would have resulted in 40pc tax being paid So we refered the client to our mortgage team who arranged some bridging finance and after discussing costs we were able to ensure there was no financial detriment for the client. In this day and age the bank of mum and dad is open 24hours a day , 7 days a week 365 days a year.
