Despite the growing demand for AI, one talent pool is still largely untapped: women.
Women occupy only 26% of data and AI roles in the workforce, but from Writer’s CEO May Habib to OpenAI’s Mira Murati, women are leading the AI revolution. So, what’s going on?
We sat down with Katherine von Jan, former Chief Strategy Officer at Salesforce, and the visionary behind stealth AI startup, to discuss the realities of being a female founder in the AI space and tackle one of the biggest challenges facing women building in AI: Funding.
"Traditionally, funding goes to men in tech and their networks," KVJ pointed out, noting how female founders only get 2% of venture capital funding. It should be about who has the best idea, explained KVJ, but funding often boils down to existing connections investors know and trust more, which unfortunately skews towards men.
Her advice for female founders in the AI space? Don’t be afraid to challenge assumptions.
The industry is so focused on finding the right answers that they forget to ask the right questions. “Real intelligence is asking great questions,” emphasized KVJ — that coupled with a diverse team is pivotal for any product’s success.
The more diverse your team is, the more experiences they bring to the table — uncovering questions that haven’t yet occurred to you. “If you don’t have a diverse team from the beginning, you’re more likely to fail,” KVJ concluded.
The takeaway? If you want to build the best product possible, you need diverse perspectives.
Join KVJ and other incredible women building with AI, like Adrian Tatsch, ServiceNow’s Devika Bhalla, Microsoft’s Rajamma Krishnamurthy, author of "The AI Dilemma" Juliette Powell, and Kathy Pham, VP of AI & ML at Workday, on March 27th for the Women Shaping AI Salon. They’ll reveal the breakthrough frameworks and processes that they’re using to accelerate product development in an inclusive way.
