Letting Kids Play on Concrete 😱: Building Skills Beyond Technique This week, our winter training venue was closed so we had to adapt and utilise a different space that we had available. Therefore our U9 team trained on a concrete surface and it turned out to be one of my favorite sessions this season. We kicked off with independant arrival games such as: "Goal to goal" (Endz) "66" (Headers and volleys) We moved into a technical skills section, followed by 4v4 matches [One goal and off] finished off with a crowd-pleaser: "World Cup Singles". The theme of the session? Finishing and scoring. What made this session special was the simplicity in the structure of the games + enviromental conditions. We had no manicured fields/3G/Sports hall, just raw concrete, which pushed the players to adapt. They learned to take different types of touches, think faster, and adjust their footwork in ways they wouldn’t on grass. It also created endless opportunities to coach various types of finishing and delve into the when/why/how as we usually do. I've come to the conclusion that to find the right balance in sessions we need to give our players the opportunity to play in less structured or even unstructured sessions - so that we can retain some of the rawness street football produced for older generations The video below is our U8s enjoying a game of World Cup singles.
