Self report is under utilized in the care of those with complex conditions, as well as in the support of their care partners. Assessments, however, need to be sufficiently comprehensive, coordinated with one another, and actionable. The #interRAI SCaN - survey of caregiver needs - identifies important health and social needs of caregivers supporting persons with complex needs. A powerful 1-2 punch with the #interRAI Check Up in supporting primary and specialized geriatric care, allowing for more integrated and effective person centered care.
What a week! Thank you to everyone who participated in an intense workshop for interRAI-SCaN at Háskóli Íslands - University of Iceland this week. It was an honour to host you all. Melissa Ziraldo Marchewka, Brittany Kroetsch, Chantelle Mensink, Connie S., Raquel Betini, John Hirdes, Brant Fries, George Heckman, Wai Chong, Ng and more 😊

Welcome to 2025 🔥 We’re excited to take the year by storm with our growing family of partners and users. In 2024, we launched two sites at Governors Island and the Brooklyn Navy Yards, introduced our product Cycleau at 17 events across three countries, and developed new features for solar power and smart water quality monitoring. This year, we’ve got two new commercial launches lined up❗and events across another three countries (stay tuned). Major thank you to all of our partners so far SWAROVSKI Foundation, MIT Solve, HP Inc., Halcyon, Re-Earth Initiative, UNICEF Innovation, Trust for Governors Island, Newlab, For ClimateTech, Wild Gift, Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation, Reckitt, and 776 Foundation, and to everyone who’s been along for the ride these past two years. Come along in 2025 to see how Cycleau will change the way we use water 🚰

That's a wrap! Thank you to everyone who came to learn more about Oshen last Friday at the IET in London😊. Here's the most popular questions we were asked, and our answers: --- Q: How do we know what sea state the micro-vessels can last in? A: We've tested in up to 25kt constant winds, 40kt gusts, and sea states just beyond the 'small craft warning'⛵ that indicates our 25ft chase boat should no longer be at sea (On the rougher end of 'Moderate' for people familiar with the shipping forecast). When we have a larger fleet later this year we look forward to taking bigger risks with individual micro-vessels and sending them on more challenging missions! --- Q: Have we considered magnetic couplers? A: Yes, especially as it could preserve the mast mechanism if the sail experienced shock loads in harsh conditions (e.g from a breaking wave 🌊). However, our main design ethos is simplicity, and we're going with a simpler design at present that maintains high spring stiffness🪢in the mast while ensuring it's not brittle. --- Q: What other applications could the micro-vessels have? A: In the talk, we covered our most immediate work on Biodiversity monitoring with a focus on protected species observations with DEFRA🐬(more details on this later this month!). This is a big R&D focus for us at the moment, so expect a lot of information about using our micro-vessels for cetacean monitoring in coming months. However, there are other applications of our micro-vessel technology: MetOcean data for more accurate forecasts⛈️, visual observations for Maritime Domain Awareness, low-power oceanographic sensors for scientific research 🧪... if you'd to know more, get in touch! REMARKS BY JAY NAIDOO Thank you for your invitation. It is a subject that is troubling most South Africans and especially Elders like me that have spent pour lifetimes as freedom fighters. The sad reality is that 40% of South Africans did not vote in our last election. This is a chilling statistic that should have been a national public debate. The question we have in our minds is how legitimate are those that today sit in our Parliament? Perhaps as interesting is the voting pattern did not give any party an outright majority. We can conclude that most South Africans to not trust our political parties, especially the old liberation movement in Africa, the ANC. I am tired of speaking in generalities. I live for the past three years in the North-West Province, close to Marikana. A province that Stats SA recently stated there are more unemployed than employed people. In this ecological catastrophe unfolding here I have chosen not to be an observer. This is our individual choice. 60 million South Africans should ask themselves, ‘What can I do to make a contribution towards nation building and healing ourselves and our country?’ So let me focus on what I am doing to make my contribution and challenge us all to do better. As I said I live in Magaliesberg Biosphere. This is a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. This ancient mountain was the home to our ancestors Australopithecus between 2-4 million years ago. Interestingly in recent times Homo Naledi surfaced as another iteration before Homo Sapiens, close to 300000 years ago. Whether this is a separate species is still a debate. It is the reputed home of all biodiversity, and the beginning of geologic time. It is 2.2 billion years old. While it has given us the one of the wealthiest biospheres of life and biodiversity in the world, it also gave us 75% of the platinum group metals of the world. We have to assess whether tis was a curse or blessing.

Happy New Year 2025: Innovation, Digital Inclusion, and an Ethical Framework for AI As we step into this new year, I would like to extend my warmest wishes to each and every one of you. May 2025 be a year filled with discoveries, successes, and precious moments shared with your loved ones. This year marks the continuation of a passionate journey where digital technology, artificial intelligence, and Moroccan craftsmanship intersect to create innovative synergies. Driven by a strong commitment to digital inclusion and a passion for Morocco’s social and economic development, I remain dedicated to ensuring that these technologies are accessible to all, especially those who have long been on the margins of digital progress. In parallel, 2025 will also be marked by an important initiative: working with certain members to finalize a proposed bill aimed at regulating artificial intelligence. The goal is to avoid the mistakes observed in other countries, often stemming from a lack of clear definitions of technological and digital objects. Thoughtful regulation is essential to ensure ethical, transparent, and beneficial use of AI, while protecting citizens and fostering innovation. Thank you to everyone accompanying me on this journey. May this new year be one of self-surpassing, boldness, and collective success. Happy New Year 2025! Dr. Az-Eddine Bennani

🙂 👋 It was a pleasure to meet you in person at drupa, thank you very much for your visit Vera Lebedeva. Oppboga Bruk AB is a reliable, long-standing partner whose quality is best suited to POLAR labelling machines. The Oppboga Nova works particularly well with our autonomous labelling system with the DC12 Plus, for example. We therefore recommend using the carton separators from Oppboga for automatic cut-to-stack labelling systems. We are looking forward to further joint projects. The Benefits: - Optimized smoothness Specifically designed as a label divider to avoid unnecessary production interruptions. - Extended Tool Life Engineered to be gentle on die-cutting tools, resulting in longer intervals between resharpening and preventing rapid tool damage. - Dark coloured shade Ideally suited as a divider for light coloured labels. - Sustainability at its core Oppboga Nova is manufactured and sourced from responsibly managed forests in Scandinavia. Not only was it my honor to nominate Karen Hao for this, I found myself citing her latest work yesterday in my panel on Humanism and AI at the same American Humanist Association conference. It's a story about how Microsoft presents its AI as a climate solution, reducing one facility's emissions by 340,000 metric tons of CO2 per year. But the company emitted 1.2 billion metric tons of CO2 last year. (3,529x the reduction!) The late University of Chicago Divinity School theologian Jonathan Z. Smith argued that one of the fundamental building blocks of religion is “its capacity for rationalization, especially as it concerns that ideological issue of relating that which we do to that which we say or think we do.” To my eye, the great work that Karen does, alongside colleagues like Matteo Wong, Damon Beres, Gideon Lichfield and others, could even be plausibly compared to the work of the Boston Globe's Spotlight team, on the Catholic Church. Sure, there's more subtlety and nuance to the unfolding story of AI, and thankfully the wrongdoing involved is less shocking. But what we are seeing in this "industry" (that I've come to see as more like a religion) is the construction of a mythology—even a theology—of both righteousness and inevitability. Great journalism, like good humanist philosophy, challenges such narratives and therefore allows us to envision other, more genuinely human possibilities. https://lnkd.in/erm4heSu
It was such an honor to receive the 2024 Humanist Media Award last night from the American Humanist Association, and even more of an honor to share the virtual stage with one of my career heroes, Ted Chiang, who received the 2024 Inquiry and Innovation Humanist Award. Over 70 years, the AHA has recognized some of the greatest giants in science communication and science fiction among its award recipients, including Carl Sagan, Isaac Asimov, Margaret Atwood, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Bill Nye. I still can't believe it also chose to recognize my work. Thank you so much to Greg Epstein for nominating me for this award, and to the AHA award committee for agreeing with him. And a sincere thank you to anyone who has ever read, shared, or acted on one of my stories. You bring my work meaning.
