It all started in my classroom for my graphic design degree where I was first introduced to the design thinking process, since then my understanding of creativity, design, and problem-solving has exponentially grown.
After the course on design thinking from the MIT media lab, reading books, articles, blogs and personal practice, the design thinking process remained blurry and incapable of providing a linear or nonlinear approach to real-world issues. As my graduation was approaching, nearly 90% of my classmates couldn’t recall any design thinking process nor could they understand or explain it, the term was familiar to many of them.
As we know it today, Design Thinking (DT) results from IDEOs codification and mechanisation to address business needs.
Design Thinking was initially created to address innovation needs and it was heavily impacted by World War II. IDEO, a design and consulting firm with offices in China, the U.S. and England played a crucial role in the popularisation of the Design Thinking (DT) process making it more accessible and user-friendly to designers and non-designers.
Throughout the years the Design Thinking process has been negatively criticised by professional designers, journalists, and researchers in the field. One of these critiques is empathy bias, which refers to the possibility that the designer or designers might have a limited view of the world or might only recognise user insights that affirm their preconceptions, leading to a low chance of effective problem-solving.
One of the main issues with the classic design thinking process is that despite its alterations and added phases by the Design Council in 2005, a consistent and universal framework that addresses most/many needs of today’s systems or social expectations is yet to be invented.
In my dissertation I have introduced a new approach to the design problem. I created a linear #design #framework with guided loops to help designers avoid confusion, blackouts, or even providing an initiation point.
