Our preclinical study with Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) shows promising results for treating penetrating traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of our hemostatic gel technology in treating TBI. Why does this matter? Penetrating TBI (such as from a gunshot or shrapnel) is the most severe form of traumatic head injury and can lead to death, permanent disability, neurodegenerative diseases, and long-term health issues. Since the DOD began tracking and reporting the number of service members diagnosed with TBI, a total of 492,167 service members sustained one or more TBIs, 5,766 of which were classified as penetrating TBI. "TBIs significantly impact the health, preparedness, and resilience of military personnel," said Dr. Anke Scultetus, WRAIR. Here is a peer reviewed evidence based research article showing the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and how it “heals” CTE, TBI, and PTSD in Israeli Army soldiers. FYI - Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive degenerative disease of the brain often found in people with a history of repetitive head impacts. This could include athletes involved in contact sports or military veterans. The condition is thought to be caused by repeated head injuries and blows to the head, which can lead to symptoms like memory loss, confusion, personality changes, and issues with motor skills. The disease slowly gets worse over time and can end up significantly impacting a person's quality of life. Unfortunately, at this time, CTE can only be definitively diagnosed post-mortem. It's a subject of ongoing research, with scientists trying to understand more about its causes, how it progresses, and how it could potentially be treated. I was proud to author a study analyzing the impact of traumatic brain injuries on veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars. Very little is known about the association between exposures and the subsequent risk of brain cancer, with the exception of ionizing radiation which has been established to increase risk. In this cohort study we found that moderate, severe, and penetrating TBI, but not mild TBI, were associated with the subsequent development of brain cancer. We have previously demonstrated that beyond brain cancer, TBI is associated with a wide range of outcomes, including cardiovascular disease, and adverse mental health outcomes. Warfare is always changing, so now we can better prepare our military for the future battlefields. This study will directly inform the Department of Defense and VA Healthcare system what potential patients are at higher risk for. Some of the findings include.: -> 450,000 out of 2 million veterans had been diagnosed with TBI at some point. Of those, about 360,000 were mild TBIs while about 64,000 suffered moderate, severe or penetrating injury. -> Within those groups, 80 with mild TBI eventually developed brain cancer, as did 27 with more severe injuries — rates much higher than we found among vets who had never been diagnosed with TBI. -> Across the U.S., roughly 7 people out of every 100,000 will develop brain cancer. The typical prognosis is poor with a 5-year survival of 35.7%.
