The first thing is to realise that you can't make your team accountable unless they are really clear on what it is they are being held accountable to do. 10 years ago I reported to a senior director in the NHS and, to be honest, she was useless (even the HR Manager agreed!). She found it impossible to be specific. So, when I was trying to get clear on her expectations of me in my new role, she couldn't tell me. All I got was a load of fluffy nonsense.
