Have you ever wondered where the trees we plant come from? Well, here’s your answer! We source our trees from qualified wholesale nurseries throughout California to ensure we have high quality planting stock with diverse species availability. And once we receive the trees from the nurseries, we give them lots of TLC before we plant them💚. 🌳 We always try to minimize the time the trees spend in the tree yard, and try to give them a luxurious, pampered experience during their stay. This includes securing them to a stake so they don't fall over, maintaining adequate spacing between trees so they get enough sun🌞, and regular irrigation 🚿 to ensure they get the water they need. 🌳 Trees that are particularly undersized or stressed from transport may stay in our yard for longer in order to grow more or to recover. We always try to plant the highest quality stock to get the best outcomes. If you’d like to volunteer to plant and care for these happy young trees, go to the link in the comments for more information and to sign up. The global agricultural landscape faces significant challenges, with unexpected crises often leaving farmers vulnerable and underserved. To address this, comprehensive support systems are essential, ranging from emergency assistance programs like Farm Rescue, which provide crucial aid during critical times, to initiatives promoting the recovery and valorization of agricultural waste. Moreover, advocating for fair contractual practices, enhancing direct market access, and offering continuous educational and technical support can empower farmers, boost their resilience, and ensure sustainable growth and productivity in the farming sector worldwide. #stopfoodwaste #supportfarms #endhunger #nowaste #farmrescue #sustainability

Life can throw us some curve balls that temporarily prevent us from being able to do what we need to do to earn a living. For farmers if the unexpected happens during a critical point in their operation, like planting, it can be devastating. If you know of a farm family in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota or South Dakota who is facing an unexpected crisis that may prevent them from getting their crops into the ground this year, please contact Farm Rescue or by phone at 701-252-2017. Farm Rescue has helped more than 1000 farm families by providing free of charge the people and equipment needed to complete planting, haying, harvesting, and other critical operations.

The submission window for the Texas A&M Forest Service Community Forestry Grant Program is now open and will close February 16, 2024. The Community Forestry Grant Program is offering more than $16 million in competitive grant opportunities for community, civic and neighborhood groups to promote the management and enhancement of urban and community forest ecosystems and provide positive impacts throughout the state of Texas. Public and non-profit entities eligible for these grants include State and local government agencies, public education institutions, NGOs or non-profits, tribal entities and public utility districts. Another goal outlined in the foundation of the grant program is to increase tree coverage to 30% on Texas school campuses through schoolyard forests grants. Access to green spaces and trees are essential in human development. They serve as a strong physical and mental health aid while also providing a practical introduction to the important role of forests and trees play within their local ecosystems. 👉 Learn more about the grant, application requirements and important dates here: https://ow.ly/YiTR50Qhvyf

In ancient Egypt, the Nile River provided fertile land for farming, but the annual floods often destroyed crops. To combat this, the Egyptians developed a system of irrigation and flood control, allowing them to plant more seeds and increase crop yields. They also used crop rotation and fertilization techniques to maintain soil fertility and improve crop yields over time. This allowed them to support a large population and build a powerful civilization that lasted for thousands of years. For years in the nonprofit world, there has been a belief that the less money an organization spends on administrative, technology and fundraising expenses, the more effective it will be in achieving its mission. Unlike the Egyptians who used research, management and technology to address hunger, the nonprofit space created a “starvation cycle.” This is a harmful cycle where nonprofits are deprived of the necessary resources to establish and maintain adequate infrastructure. As a consequence, these organizations are struggling to perform basic functions and meet the needs of their beneficiaries. Check out my blog post below to see examples of organizations (nonprofits and higher education) who are more successful as a result of their investment in overhead. https://lnkd.in/e2TAytGf

Did you know Friends of the Urban Forest provides tree care as well as tree planting? These “before” and “after“ photos are from a Community Tree Care event in the Excelsior last week. The tree in the photo is an Evergreen Pear (Pyrus kawakamii) that was planted in 2019. It had a lot of thick low branches that were growing into the sidewalk and street, so our Tree Care Coordinator, Max Kerr, and four volunteers raised its canopy and made some reduction cuts on branches that were a clearance issue. They also removed its hardware (its trunk was thicker than the stakes and the arbor ties were starting to damage the bark). The volunteer in the “after” photo is Susan Green, one of our wonderful regular volunteers! A big thanks to all of the volunteers who came out to our Community Tree Care event in the Excelsior! If you’d like to volunteer planting trees, taking care of trees, or planting sidewalk gardens, check out the link in the comments for more info and to sign up. *If you’re particularly interested in tree care, there’s a Community Tree Care event this Friday, July 26th in the Bayview. Image Description Two photographs are side by side. The left photo is a “before” photo of an Evergreen Pear tree with a lot of hanging branches. The right photo is an “after” photo of the tree once the branches were trimmed. A volunteer holds shears and looks up into the tree’s branches. #climatechange #nonprofit #climateaction #green #volunteer #greytogreen #arboriculture

For anyone worried about the catastrophic climate chaos we face, supporting this proposal every way you can is a powerful way to take action. Yes we must also insist that our leaders act boldly and immediately. Of course personally we must act to ensure that our carbon footprint is as small possible and that any land that we have an influence on is cared for using regenerative principles. But supporting Contour Lines takes it to the next level. This project enables us to be a part of the empowerment of those on the front lines of what Christian Parenti so poignantly describes as The Tropic of Chaos. Today it's Guatemala (and wisely also here in the USA so that we can see it and be inspired by it ourselves!) here's hoping soon in Haiti, Jamaica, Yemen, Pakistan Afghanistan India..... Some of us are receiving emails claiming that those who say that the solution is to plant trillion trees are delusional. I say it is never a mistake to focus on planting and caring for trees in manner that ensures they thrive ... It doesn't matter if someone's goal is reachable or not. . Every tree that thrives is a regenerative engine! That said it is legitimate to point out that planting trees does not get us off the hook with regards to ending our reliance on fossil fuels yesterday! Support Contour Lines because they understand that the best regenerative work is doomed if the people where the work is being done are denied food security and economic justice. Community powered and controlled Food Forests are about as hopeful as it gets. THANK YOU Contour Lines!
Please repost this proposal!!! Contour Lines is seeking new corporate and philanthropic partners to support our work in Guatemala. We have a very strong record of efficiently planting trees with indigenous famers. Our team of technicians, nursery, and thousands of hopeful farmers are in place to help your organization meet your #csr and #esg goals by planting over 2 million more trees in 2024. These #agroforestry projects not only sequester #carbon though #reforestation. These projects create new nutrition and economic opportunities in communities, and transition land from a slash and burn rotation to permanent forest cover. Check out more information at www.contourlines.org and consider making a holiday donation to support our projects.

Why knowing and knitting the network matters ... "While their experience makes for a heartwarming story, as Fisher implies it’s not the whole solution. The support system woven by #relationships between farmers and community members isn’t foolproof. There are holes, not everyone is connected equally, and there are limits to the kinds of help social #networks and generosity can provide. "After 26 years of farming in Conway, Fisher is well networked among his peers. 'But when I went to the event CISA (Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture) put on for farmers to talk about disaster relief,' he says, 'I looked out and thought, I don’t know most of these people.' "Bringing together farmers and supporting groups to network and collaborate is one way CISA helps strengthen the local farm support system. Other organizations help farmers market products together or advocate collectively for #policychange. At a very grassroots level, many local farmers connect with their peers through a farmers-only email listserv — the one Natural Roots used to coordinate gleaning and food donations. "These #networking opportunities are helpful, but also limited by technological barriers and whether everyone feels welcome. For example, a seventh-generation dairy farmer might be more comfortable speaking their mind in a group than a recently resettled refugee. Both may have difficulty with listservs and video calls. "A farm’s business model also impacts its access to these relationship-based safety nets. 'We are extremely privileged that our #community feels so connected to us through our CSA,' Fisher says. 'Farms that sell wholesale and don’t talk directly to customers are much more alone when they struggle. Not because they aren’t worthy, they just operate differently.'” h/t Jacob Nelson and CISA (Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture) https://lnkd.in/efExjy5k
