AbbVie’s third successful Parkinson’s trial sets the stage for an eventful 2025 AbbVie Inc. announced positive data from a third late-stage trial of a treatment for Parkinson’s disease on Monday and said it’s on track to seek approval for the drug from the Food and Drug Administration in 2025.

Although we inadvertently missed National Fentanyl Awareness Day on May 7th, we feel that we still need to recognize that today! U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) urges the public to remain cognizant of the extreme threat of fentanyl in our communities: * Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is approximately 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine. Just two milligrams—the equivalent of a few grains of salt—is a potentially lethal dose. * The Sinaloa and Jalisco cartels are hiding fentanyl in fake pills that look like prescription medications, such as oxycodone, Xanax, and Percocet. The cartels are also mixing fentanyl powder into other drugs, including cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine. Many of the people poisoned by fentanyl had no idea they were even taking it. * The cartels, their members, and their associates continue using social media applications and encrypted communications platforms to sell pills and powders that are advertised as legitimate medications or other substances, but actually contain fentanyl. * The only safe medications are ones that come from licensed and accredited medical professionals. I’ve been thinking about nitazines! Obviously I completely agree with the desperate need for evidence-based interventions in the UK. Drug checking, safer supply, OPC’s, naloxone etc. (the list will be very familiar to lots of you!). However, let’s be honest, because of years of evidence-free drug policy, it will take months or years to roll out some of these across the country with reactionary politics slowing down implementation all the way. Nitazines are here NOW….today!!! And today we have just 2 drug checking facilities in the UK. We have no safer supply programmes that I know of. No OPC’s in England or Wales and patchy distribution of naloxone. On the other hand- today, we have people using nitazenes whether knowingly or not. We need to learn how to adapt to their use. We need to talk to people who knowingly use nitazenes (principly anaesthetists and drug users or even better- drug-using anaesthetists!!!!), and ask them how they use it and why they think they’re still alive!!!! What do they do to reduce the risk of overdose? How do they measure a non- lethal dose? From this we can develop practical harm reduction until our country catches up. Thoughts please!!!!! Especially from anaesthetists/pain specialists.
