A recent census by Solace Women's Aid and the Single Homeless Project has revealed shocking figures: over 1,000 women experienced rough sleeping in just three months this year—almost double the official government count. Many women remain invisible due to safety concerns, avoiding mixed hostels and staying in unsafe or transient situations like A&E waiting rooms or on public transport. Women’s homelessness is closely linked to domestic abuse, trauma, and mental ill-health, and traditional methods of counting rough sleepers fail to account for these hidden experiences. At Cripplegate Foundation, we’re committed to tackling the systemic inequalities faced by homeless women. This summer, we joined 46 other organisations in calling for urgent government action to make homelessness responses gender-informed, improve data collection, and ensure access to safe accommodation. We stand with Solace and SHP in urging a cross-sector approach to addressing this crisis. Women deserve better. 📢 Read more about the findings and our calls to action via the link in our comments ⬇️ #EndHomelessness #HiddenHomelessness #DomesticAbuse #DomesticViolence #GenderEquality #SocialJustice
Thanks to the Mirror for putting women’s hidden rough sleeping and the census front and centre yesterday - exactly where it needs to be until we see significant policy and practice change across the country. I defy anyone to read Lainey and Michelle’s accounts of sleeping in hospitals, in squats, on buses and often just walking the streets all night, and say that these experiences don’t count as rough sleeping. Yet according to the current definition, they don’t. Their homelessness never showed up in data. And they were rough sleeping for two and a half years and three and a half years respectively, without ever being found by homelessness services. During those years they experienced repeated physical and sexual attacks. Imagine fearing for your life, every night, for years.
