The term covers a range of situations, including people sleeping rough, single individuals living in emergency or temporary supported accommodation, households legally recognised as homeless and seeking assistance from local authorities, and the 'hidden homeless'—such as those ‘sofa surfing’. The growing homeless population presents considerable challenges for agencies striving to provide preventive support and interventions that address complex needs. This tool has been designed to assist practitioners from statutory bodies, charities, and third-sector organizations in gathering information in a way that enables lawful decision-making and fosters effective interventions. These interventions uphold key safeguarding principles, including empowering adults at risk to take steps to protect themselves. On March 27th, I’ll be leading the #CCPBIGSleepout to raise £100,000 for Caring for Communities and People and our mission to prevent the causes and reduce the impact of homelessness. Last year, thanks to incredible support, we surpassed our goal—helping 47 people pay off rent debts, avoid eviction, and keep their homes. And we piloted our first emergency pod, giving individuals experiencing homelessness a safe space and a route out of crisis. We have our first guest and he’s doing so very well :) This year, we’re calling on business leaders, teams, and individuals to join us. 🧣 Keeping the housing crisis front of mind: Liam Golding joins Vinnies CEO Sleepout 🧣 On any given night, around 7,500 South Australians are homeless. The housing stress denying them of their dignity and potential. “While it isn’t a one size fits all solution for those experiencing homelessness, the answer to the housing crisis ultimately comes down to this — building more houses,” says Liam Golding. “While the Urban Development Institute continues persistent advocacy for the right conditions and reforms that will get houses built, I am taking my message to the streets and joining the 2024 Vinnies CEO Sleepout SA.” Though it is for just one night, it’s another means of placing focus on the critical shortage of housing while at the same time raising awareness of the realities of homelessness and funds for the St Vincent de Paul Society Australia to support South Australians in need. “Each and every day I am confronted with the challenges faced by our industry as we attempt to build houses and deliver on the fundamental human need for shelter and a place to call home.” Not just braving the cold, Liam is aiming to raise $4,000 to support the work of St Vincent de Paul Society who are struggling to meet increasing demand for their services. “I’d greatly appreciate any donations for the Vinnies CEO Sleepout — a little can go a long way." What better way to re-acquaint yourself with the Irish weather than participating in a sleep-out? On a more serious note, Ireland is a very different place than the country I left 15 years ago, and has made so much progress across so many economic and societal dimensions. Sadly, addressing homelessness is not one of them, and this is now a much more prevalent issue than it was when I left these shores. As we all know this is a complex issue and in 2024, there are over 14,000 people in homelessness across Ireland, including more than 4,000 children. An organization that is making a meaningful difference in tacking this problem is Focus Ireland. In 2023, Focus Ireland supported 18,000+ people, with 1,100 Households exiting homelessness, and 1,200 additional Households assisted in keeping their home. To help them make an even bigger contribution in the future, I’ll be taking part in a nationwide sleep-out alongside hundreds of others for their ‘Shine A Light’ campaign. This initiative aims to raise essential funds and awareness for the thousands of people, including children and families, who are facing homelessness. Where would you wash your socks if you were living on the street? Where would you dry them? The reality is, it’s a huge challenge to keep your clothes clean and dry when experiencing street homelessness. The right laundry facilities just aren't available. Often the only answer is to start again with a new pair. --------------------- We gave out lots of colourful socks in Tottenham Court Road, central London, this week. ❤️💙💚💛 It’s so important that people have a clean, warm pair as the weather turns ❄️ There’s no need for ID and no questions asked when people pick up items from our van. Turn a Corner is a mobile library for people experiencing homelessness. It provides lots of essentials like sleeping bags, coats and toiletries – and socks. Following an investigation into the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP), the protocol triggered by local authorities during extreme weather, it was discovered that the number of deaths recorded in summer months exceeds those in winter due to extreme heat and heat-related illnesses. The report found only 53% of councils activated SWEP in summer months despite temperatures reaching up to 40°c. This highlights the urgent need for better support systems and the critical role of small homelessness charities in filling these gaps. Simon's Big Sleep Out 2024 is eleven weeks away today! 💤 Our flagship annual fundraiser is back and lands on World Homeless Day... 📅 Thursday 10th October 📍 Leeds Civil Hall 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗼𝗻'𝘀 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗦𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗢𝘂𝘁? We know this event can’t ever replicate the true conditions of homelessness. But it can shine a light on the trauma and challenges homelessness brings. On the night, everyone will bed down for the night in the open elements to help raise funds for our charity. 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁? At the beginning of the evening, we'll have hot drinks, food and we'll also have speakers discussing the issues around homelessness. We'll also have entertainment on earlier in the night. The whole group will then bed down later in the night until the morning. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗜 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁? There are so many reasons.  In Yorkshire alone, we’ve seen a 59% rise in the number of people with nowhere to call home, and we need your help.  Homelessness is a complex issue that affects individuals and families across our communities.
