📣 #Bipartisan Laws to Stop #HealthcareSystems from Building #Monopolies and Exploiting & Endangering Patients, Staff, & Entire Communities📣 On January 31, 2024, Sophia Tripoli, MPH, of Families USA, testified before the US House Committee on Energy and Commerce about #hospitals being #consolidated by large healthcare systems, #monopolisticpricing that exploits patients, & #lackoftransparency of the healthcare ownership & pricing for all American consumers. This Committee Hearing was prompted by the financial collapse of several Steward hospitals in Massachusetts & other states due to its business model involving #privateequity investor Cerberus & #saleleaseback transaction with real estate investor Medical Properties Trust. “We reward building #medical #monopolies and #pricegouging instead of ensuring the health and well-being of our nation's families.” “Healthcare industry #consolidation has eliminated #competition and allowed monopolistic pricing to push our families to the brink of financial ruin.” Video of Testimony: https://lnkd.in/gBW8kQf9 Written Transcript: https://lnkd.in/evhgDVaS To learn more, see press releases of Families USA: https://lnkd.in/gqgYgidz

Without a doubt Hospital consolidation into large monopolistic healthcare systems that "buy" practices to feed the high cost services has done little to nothing to improve quality. In addition these large not for profit entities also "partner" with healthcare insurance companies to further their control. Unfortunately the time to disallow this practice is long gone and I fear the difficulty in unwinding these systems may further harm patient care. Monumental task but not impossible.

Ironically enough, though, the big names in MA healthcare are inevitably going to be the ones to purchase Steward’s hospitals. Smaller community hospitals and systems likely don’t have the capital required for such an acquisition.
