I am thrilled to share a significant milestone in my career and a transformative experience in my personal life. I successfully completed the Management Executive program at the College of Business - The University of Akron in partnership with LAIOB - Latin America Institute of Business As I previously mentioned after the program's first week, it proved to be an incredible journey, and now that it's concluded, I'm eager to share my final reflections. When I initially applied, my expectations were centered around the management content, anticipating new methods, fresh perspectives, and a strong focus on business administration. However, as the program unfolded, I was pleasantly surprised to find an emphasis on leadership skills, self-development, developing others, and decision-making. Though not entirely new concepts, the program presented them in a wholly different perspective, taught by remarkable and experienced professors. The Business English program was the most delightful surprise, evolving from self-awareness to advanced communication and presentation skills. The networking aspect was a significant plus, allowing me to connect with outstanding individuals excelling in both personal and professional realms. An additional highlight was attending a class on labor law at the University of Akron School of Law. It was fascinating to observe the substantial differences between American and Brazilian laws concerning retirement, social assistance, and health. Completing this program has left me with more questions than when I started, opening up various options and paths not just in terms of my career. While I wish I could delve deeper into this incredible opportunity, I'll leave you with some quotes and lessons I've gathered, applicable to both personal and professional aspects of life. "If you allow any negative thought into your mind, damage can ensue on a physical and mental level." Robb Martin SPHR GPHR, CPH, "Make your purpose meaningful." Mark Rittenour "Beginnings are hard, endings are sad, focus on the middle." Dean R.J. Nemer Life cannot solely revolve around our goals; we must also concentrate on our journey and relish every step along the way.

Brand-centered leadership coach + 🎓professor of communication | ---‐》I help individuals + teams unlock their personal brand. Then leverage their expertise + value to solve problems + become leaders in your field.
At a time when #collegeeducation is facing its greatest challenge, a demand to stay relevant, I've been fortunate to teach a seminal college course called "Communication in Organizations" at Roger Williams University. I #teach this course in particular from an industry-centric perspective. Becoming "#careerready" and #personalgrowth is always my focus because many of my students are on their final leg of college and some are already on the #jobmarket by the time they take this class. To make this approach to a college class work, I cant do it alone. I need help from my colleagues in industry. Shoutout to the all the #industryprofessionals who shared their time, #expertise and energy to RWU via my "Communication in Organizations" course this past two academic years: Tres-Ann Kremer, PhD - Regional Director, Caribbean - Tony Blair Institute. Angela Ankoma - Director of Equity Leadership Initiative, Rhode Island Foundation. Theresa Matos Agonia - Former Deputy Communication Chief, Mayor of Providence. Giovanni Pinto - Senior Communication and Legislative Advisor, Office of Connecticut Governor, Ned Lamont. Sarah von der Linde - Clients Relations, New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq. Monsurat O. - Attorney at Law and Cybersecurity strategist, Homeland Security. Margaret (Maggie) Werner - Senior Communications Specialist, Hartford Healthcare Group, Connecticut. Sabrina Caserta, Former reporter turned Media Analyst and Legal investigator Basil Waite - Entrepreneur and Former Government of Jamaica senator. David Prendergast - Diplomat and Trade policy Specialist. Lyndon Taylor - Public Relations Specialist, formerly of Finn Partners, NYC. Connor Lewis, Visual Communications specialist, Studio Lewis, Massachusetts. To bring the industry into the classroom is to help students bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and current application in the workplace and business environment. Industry professionals invited to guest lecture also model for students the value of leading with your #personalbrand and owning the unique value that they can deliver to potential #employers. Lots of administration, planning and coordination to pull this off. All we can hope is that students see the benefit and engage in the process in a way which is meaningful and beneficial to their career and #personaldevelopment. Loads of thanks everyone! Much love ♥️ 🟣 Dr. Hume

After another great ICE Education conference for Heads of PE, Will Swaithes recommended the book Rebel Ideas by Matthew Syed to think about our Leadership qualities and how to get the best out of the departments we work in. The book explores the power of diverse perspectives and dissent in driving innovation and success. Syed argues that embracing differing viewpoints and challenging established norms is essential for progress in various fields, from business to sports to politics. The book draws on examples from history, psychology, and contemporary society and highlights the benefits of cognitive diversity and the dangers of groupthink. Syed emphasizes the importance of fostering environments where people feel safe to voice dissenting opinions and where collaboration across diverse backgrounds is encouraged. Overall, Rebel Ideas challenges you to rethink your problem-solving approach and embrace the value of unconventional thinking. My biggest takeaway was the idea that we must be challenged to succeed. While that seems obvious, we are good at sticking to what and who we know. We shy away from those who challenge our ideas, yet they are the people we need to have on our side to grow. It reminds me of a scene in Jerry Maguire that I haven’t fully understood. When Jerry and Rod Tidwell are arguing in the changing room, and Jerry walks out - Rod shouts back to him - “here’s the difference between you and me: you think we’re fighting, but I think we’re finally talking.” For me this means we must embrace the challenges and the different opinions to find a more straightforward path.

Drum roll, please! There is something very exciting happening The University of Salford! One thing I’ve learned in over 25 years of working in change is that you can’t be a change agent on your own. History tells us successful change requires a small, committed group of like-minded people united by a common purpose to be the ambassadors. And that’s exactly what we’ve done! Hear about the impact it’s having in the video below. Thinking of establishing your own peer network to bring about change? Consider these tips: • Get the right people in the room • Be clear on your purpose • Set expectations (contributions, time involved, communication) • Agree on how you want to work together (values and behaviours) And most importantly, have fun! :) #changeagent #highereducation #peernetwork

An organization has a history of delaying things because they aren’t yet “ready”, or because they are convinced that waiting will save a small percent of the overall expenditure. I’m convinced that perfect is the enemy of good and that effective implementation is more important that having the perfect plan. “I’d rather implement a good plan well than implement a great plan poorly.” Delay almost always feels like a lack of urgency. Do you agree? Are these ideas in opposition to each other, are they complementary? How do you get your organization to “just go” or should you?
