++ RESEARCH IN A NUTSHELL ++ 🚀 New research in the Journal of Marketing by our Michiel Van Crombrugge reveals key insights into how multi-brand retailers (e.g., MediaMarktSaturn) adapt when suppliers (e.g., Samsung Electronics) launch direct sales channels. 🔍 Analyzing thousands of retailers, the study found that the average retailer reduces the number of products ordered and faces an increase in wholesale prices. 📉 Especially smaller retailers significantly disengage while larger retailers rather maintain their order value trusting the supplier’s ongoing support. 🛠️ Suppliers need to anticipate these reactions and adopt a segmented approach. Offering incentives like lower wholesale prices or differentiated products can help retain retailer engagement.
