Ditch the Chemicals Stopping the use of chemical toxins in our gardens is another absolutely key thing you can do to promote the health of the environment and biodiversity. When we rely on chemicals to control pests, we disrupt the delicate balance of ecosystems. In destroying the very foundations of the food web, that is microorganisms and insects, we put the rest of the ecosystem in imbalance, which has dangerous consequences for the ability of Nature to provide us with the things we need, such as crop pollination and clean water. There are other ways that we can manage our environment, through natural means. By allowing natural predators to thrive and supporting them with suitable plant choices, we create a more sustainable and resilient garden environment. Therefore, selecting plants that are well-suited to your garden's environment can help prevent pest problems from occurring in the first place. Furthermore, supporting a diverse range of plant species not only provides food sources for pollinating insects but also attracts predators that help control pest populations. Plants with small, flat, open flowers such as dill, fennel, yarrow, marigolds, sunflowers, and cosmos are particularly attractive to aphid-hunting predators like lacewings, ladybirds, rove beetles, and braconid wasps. In summary, going chemical-free in gardening fosters a healthier and more harmonious ecosystem, where natural processes are allowed to flourish, promoting biodiversity and reducing the need for harmful chemical inputs. Join us on World Water Day for a special event: The Problem and Promise of Peat This event is co-presented by Water Docs and Regenerating Toronto When: 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. E.T. | Friday, March 22 (World Water Day) Where: Swansea Town Hall, 95 Lavinia Ave, Toronto, ON M6S 3H9 Peat is powerful. Peatlands store twice as much carbon as all the world’s forests, according to the UN. But when mined for things like garden potting soil, those benefits are lost. In celebration of World Water Day on March 22, Water Docs and Regenerating Toronto are co-hosting this event in anticipation of the upcoming gardening season. We will learn and discuss peat use in Ontario and why its continued use is problematic for our climate and much more. The evening will feature a screening of the 2023 film The Breathing Lands and other short films, expert speakers* and information on alternatives to peat in gardening, as well as a connection to solutions and actions to take to help attendees make a difference, both locally and globally. How are the immense peatbogs of the Hudson Bay lowlands in Ontario connected to the potting soil you use? How are they and the peatlands around the world connected to the carbon cycle, the water cycle, the very breath of the Earth? How are these intimately connected to Indigenous cultures?
