🌿 Get to know a Groundworker: Rick Knifley, US Sales 🌿 Rick brings his valuable perspective to Groundwork BioAg, combining his decades of ag sales experience with a deep understanding of farm life. He'll be at the following Farm Journal Crop Tours: 👨🌾 Bloomfield, IL on 8/20 Iowa City, IA on 8/21 Q. What led you to Groundwork BioAg? A. After thirty years in ag sales, working with plant nutrition and soil health products, I became interested in biologicals. While working for another company struggling to find the right mycorrhizal inoculant, I discovered Groundwork BioAg and Rootella. I then met Andrew Duff (US General Manager), and here I am. Q. How does your farming background influence the way you approach ag sales? A. Growing up on a family farm raising livestock and managing my grandfather’s alfalfa hay business gave me a “farmer first” mentality. I still farm with some buddies and help them out in the spring and fall. I will always put grower needs over sales quotas. I start by understanding the soil and plant health situation, and then I recommend solutions. I sometimes call myself “the worst ag salesman” because finding the right solution, even if not from Groundwork BioAg, while building trust and long-term relationships, are my top priorities. Q. Tell me more about how you prioritize your relationships with growers? A. My approach is to listen to the grower, understand what he or she needs, and find the best solution without pushing any product, philosophy or program that they’re not comfortable implementing. It might not even be with me or with Groundwork BioAg. But I’m building trust – and the grower will remember and come back later. I focus on strengthening industry connections because I know it all comes full circle. Q. What is unique about selling Rootella Carbon, the world’s first mycorrhizal carbon program? A. Rootella Carbon is not the first #carbon program in my career I’ve been involved with, but it’s by far the easiest. #Rootella Carbon’s qualifications are simpler and we’re comfortable to work with. The main frustration today among growers today is not with the program, but with evolving policies that make it difficult for them to commit. Q. What’s your message for growers about mycorrhizal inoculants? A. Education on #mycorrhiza is improving. After years of working with biologicals, I now see “mycorrhizal fungi” becoming a familiar term. The biological space is starting to take off and within it, Rootella is a unique product with the highest concentration of mycorrhiza on the market. As growers begin to understand the minimal cost and significant ROI in terms of plant nutrition and soil health, they realize that we’re bringing a major shift to agriculture. Sales Professionals, I need your help— I recently met a client at my daughter's graduation and took the opportunity to engage him about how our staff is servicing his aquarium. We had a great conversation, and was very happy with our work. However, he did express one complaint: we do not upsell enough. He mentioned that we don’t reach out regularly to suggest new fish or additions. Here’s our challenge: When it comes to aquariums and livestock, our primary concern is ensuring the stability and health of the system. Introducing new fish into a established and stocked aquarium can sometimes disrupt this balance and potentially risk the health of the entire aquarium, which is why we’re cautious about making frequent changes. I explained this dilemma to the client, and while he understood, I felt he wasn’t entirely satisfied with my response. Would you take the risks associated with frequent upselling and deal with any potential downfalls, or would you continue prioritizing stability and safety? I am sure the client would prefer the safety direction (even when he says otherwise) however he is missing some of the fun and excitement he had when he was choosing all the fish initially. I can imagine #moneymangers would deal with the risk vs return dilemma.. Does your industry deal with similar dilemmas?

GLOBAL MARKET OVERVIEW #ORANGES As the Northern Hemisphere winter chill lifts it is also time for the traditional switch over to Southern Hemisphere suppliers of oranges. The main citrus production country Spain is said to have had a good season with falling prices now towards the end, but their supply will last a bit longer than last year. However, the Spanish again bemoan the fact that the "European market highly appreciates Spanish oranges, but doesn't want to pay for them." They also complain about the low priced and lower quality oranges from Egypt that flooded European markets including their own local market. North Korea plans to start apple supplies to Russian market According to the statement, all questions from the Korean side were resolved and the parties agreed on the possibility of starting deliveries MOSCOW, July 15/ Russia and North Korea agreed to start deliveries of apples to the Russian market, the press service of the Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor) told TASS. "North Korea has expressed interest in the supply of regulated products to Russia. At the negotiations held in June 2024, the parties noted great potential for expanding trade cooperation in the supply of products, in particular, apples. As part of the negotiations, which took place during the signing of the memorandum on plant quarantine, all questions from the Korean side were resolved and the parties agreed on the possibility of starting deliveries," the statement said. The agency noted that apples from North Korea can be freely supplied to Russia with a phytosanitary certificate confirming the absence of quarantine organisms in the goods in accordance with the EAEU legislation. Earlier, Russian Minister of Agriculture Oksana Lut reported that the Ministry of Agriculture has lowered the forecast for the apple harvest in Russia in 2024 from 1.8 mln to 1.5 mln tons due to frost and is working with friendly countries on the supply of additional volumes of apples. #business #finance #financialservices
