Detecting holes invisible to the naked eye is obviously tricky. Historically, this task has been carried out using pressure decay or helium leak systems. However, both of these techniques are time-consuming and, with the diminishing supplies of helium, represent costly methods of quality checking. High voltage leak detection, though effective only on polymer parts and limited by shape and size, proves to be highly efficient for many moulded components. Explore the determination of tack using various adhesive substances and substrates in this application note. Tackiness, or adhesion, refers to the tendency of materials to form a connection with a substrate under short-term contact pressure. The Modular Compact Rheometer (MCR) from Anton Paar enables characterization of both solid and liquid samples (solid tack, wet tack). To account for the influence of the substrate on tack, a holder for mounting different plates on the MCR was developed. Fibrillated electrode mixtures have very special but highly interesting product properties, on the one hand due to their elastic-plastic behavior, and on the other hand due to their ability to reversibly assume different bulk material states from doughy to granular to powdery through temperature control.
One way to produce dry electrodes #DBE using free-standing electrode films is by using PTFE. The long bead-chain-like PTFE molecules, which are wound into granular structures, must be broken up into shorter fibers by high shear and temperature, which then form cotton wool-like, cross-linked fiber structures. The active materials and additives are firmly embedded in the resulting spider web. With optimum fibrillation, the resulting electrode mass can be easily formed and rolled out into thin, highly flexible and stable films. These can then be laminated onto the current collector foil. The Eirich mixer used here, a 40l R05T, is ideal for producing such fibrous structures with good forming properties in pilot scale, as the photo impressively shows. Only a few minutes mixing time in the Eirich mixer is sufficient to produce such a fibrillated and homogeneous electrode mass from the powder origin. #electrode #lithiumion

Mixing with the stir bar on the magnetic stirrer can sometimes be challenging with higher viscosity. However, there's a solution: the overhead stirrer makes stirring effortless and effective even with difficult consistencies. Assessing the effectiveness of a surface treatment often begins by looking at the wettability. This can be easily assessed by applying a liquid test ink. On the surface treated with the plasma flame, a clearly increased wettability can be seen, which appears as a broader trace of the applied liquid.
