This week, Paul Hunt, Research Team Leader at our Rawcliffe Bridge manufacturing site, is giving a talk on the challenges and opportunities surrounding sustainable polymers in the industrial sector at the IUPAC Macro 2024: 50th World Polymer Conference, held at The University of Warwick. Polymers in Liquid Formulations (PLFs) are a broad group of polymers used as rheology modifiers, emulsifiers, and binders in many everyday items, including household detergents, cosmetics, and agrochemicals. During the presentation, Paul will discuss the approaches Croda is taking in the development of commercially viable, novel biobased, and biodegradable polymers, which may serve as alternatives to traditional PLFs such as polyacrylates. The presentation will also address questions regarding performance characterisation. Find out more about the conference here: https://ow.ly/rIUw50SttuF

The current plastic industries are increasing awareness of health and the environment with concern for reducing CO2 emissions. Alternatively, one of the key solutions is utilizing natural resources of feedstock to produce bio-plasticizers for bioplastic industries. Here is one of my review articles published in Biotechnology Progress talks about “Developments of biobased plasticizers for compostable polymers in the green packaging applications: A review” The article’s link https://lnkd.in/dZKNVs3T

🌿 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗹𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗼𝗮𝗺𝘀 🌿 Excited to share our latest research published in the Journal of Polymers and the Environment and Polymers journals! We have been diving deep into the potential of biobased polymers like PLA (polylactic acid) and PHBV (poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)) to revolutionize the production of bead foams. 🔬 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: 𝗥𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗿𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿: By blending PLA with PHBV, we've tailored the properties of these biopolymers to enhance the foam extrusion process, achieving bead foams with densities below 100 kg/m³, small cell sizes (below 50 µm), and high cell densities (up to 1×10⁷ cells/cm³). 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: Our work focuses on creating sustainable, biodegradable alternatives to traditional polystyrene foams, which are widely used but have a significant environmental footprint. 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: These innovations open up new possibilities for sustainable packaging, sports equipment, and beyond, where lightweight, durable, and eco-friendly materials are in high demand. This research represents a significant step towards more sustainable material solutions in industries that rely heavily on polymers. #UDtechtransfer presents a breakthrough in transforming plastic waste into valuable resources! By efficiently utilizing enzymes in a one-pot process, our researchers have cracked the code to create high-value polymers like polyamides, polyimides, and non-isocyanate polyurethanes from common plastic waste, including polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Devised by Wilfred Chen and Aditya Kunjapur from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Delaware, this innovation aligns with the global movement towards a more sustainable future and is #availableforlicensing.
