It’s Black History Month, so let’s talk skin of color. Research shows skin cancer in patients with darker skin is often diagnosed at much later stages, when it becomes more difficult to treat. Many people don’t realize that skin cancer can affect anyone, and they may wait too late to receive treatment. 21% of melanoma cases in Black or African American patients are diagnosed when the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes, and 16% are diagnosed when the cancer has spread to distant lymph nodes and other organs. (American Academy of Dermatology). The most important thing you can do to prevent skin cancer is wear sunscreen everyday and reapply throughout the day.. Corey L. DIY sunscreens are trending on social media but experts warn they're doing more harm than good. “People have this idea that they’re toxic or harmful or endocrine disruptors or will cause cancer in and of themselves,” Dr. Dustin Portela tells Fortune. However, there’s no medical evidence that sunscreen causes cancer, and the FDA, CDC, and the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommend wearing it—just not making it. In the AAD’s official statement on homemade sunscreen, they warn that “research shows that most homemade sunscreens lack effective sun protection, leaving users vulnerable to sunburn, premature skin aging, and skin cancer, the most common cancer in the U.S.” These are the risks of homemade sunscreens and the best way to protect your skin: bit.ly/4fE0RBp

On #WorldCancerDay, let's stand together in the fight against cancer. To prevent delays in early detection and treatment, it is essential that we prioritise safe and effective care. Did you know that you’re less likely to die of skin cancer if you expose yourself to the Sun? Skin cancer kills less than 3 per 100,000 people in the U.S. each year. For every person who dies of skin cancer, more than 100 die from cardiovascular diseases. Pelle Lindqvist, a senior research fellow in obstetrics and gynecology at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute, home of the Nobel Prize in Medicine, tracked the sunbathing habits of nearly 30,000 women in Sweden over 20 years. Lindqvist found that sun worshippers had a higher incidence of melanoma - but they were eight times less likely to die from it. Lindqvist decided to look at overall mortality rates, and the results were shocking. Over the 20 years of the study, sun avoiders were twice as likely to die as sun worshippers.
