A few weeks ago I shared some ideas of how I was using #chatgpt to write my resume. After using Teal and Jobscan I found no substitute for using Chat. Well, I've refined my approach to take advantage of Chat's ability to refine as you ask more questions and get better results. Here are the steps that I'm now taking. STEP 1 - "Hi ChatGPT, I am looking for a job and need your help tailoring my resume to a job. The name of the company is____ And I’m interested in their (copy/paste role title) role. This is the job description (copy the entire job description here). In the next message I will provide you with my resume." STEP 2 ChatGPT will acknowledge what you’re tying to do and say something along the lies of “looking forward to seeing you resume” and you respond with: Here is my resume: (insert entire resume) STEP 3 - ChatGPT will give you a resume that tailors your experience as outlined on your resume to the job description you gave earlier. Next, ask ChatGRT to ask you questions that can help it further tailor your resume. “What questions do you have for me about my previous experience that will help you tailor my resume to the job description? STEP 4 ChatGPT will ask you questions. Answer them as thoroughly as possible. If you need multiple messages to answer all the questions, tell ChatGPT you will answer the rest in the next message. It helps if you put the question number in front of your answer so that ChatGPT knows which question you’re answering. I'm using Chatgpt4 and it sequentially went down the questions. You also have unlimited time to answer so take your time. STEP 5 - ChatGPT will give you a customized resume highlighting your relevant experience. You can copy/paste it over your old resume or you can simply copy/paste some bullets. Be as specific as you can as you're answering the questions that Chat is asking. At this point you can also have a conversation with ChatGPT about some of your experiences to tailor it further. You can chat with ChatGPT as if it were a resume consultant in a human-like dialogue. Remember, Chat is there to help but it doesn't know anything about you. It's your job to make it an expert on you. What’s your stance on resume writing in this tech era of AI? ChatGPT resumes vs. self written resumes vs. a blend of both ChatGPT and self-written? Pros for ChatGPT written resumes - Speed: Craft a resume in less than 60 seconds. How great is that?! - Minimize human error: no misspellings or grammatical errors. What a lifesaver?! - “Professionally written”: or so it seems. Cons for ChatGPT written resumes - The client will be interviewing you if they are interested, not the technology who built the resume for you. Technology is incredible; to think that 41 years ago was the “official” birth of the internet and here we are today swimming in a world of possibilities around automation. What will the next 41 years be like? Even if the Pros may outweigh the Cons at face value, something about your voice and communication style holds significant value. More than you may give yourself credit for. Your experience and voice written on paper in addition to who you know that can facilitate a conversation with a target client will arguably provide you with more value than being fully dependent on AI for resume building. I’m a fan of leveraging AI as a supplemental tool with resume writing to enhance key talking points.
