Disruption!💥A new opportunity! 🛫 Although, the biggest disruption with employee disengagement happened with covid, it started long before that and continues today. Only 21% of global employees are engaged and in the U.S. only 32% of employees are engaged according to Gallup. These numbers are worse than in 2018.😞 And let's face it, everyone up and down the org chart is experiencing disengagement and trying to deal with it. I have family and friends in leadership roles that are frustrated with being ghosted, living with cancel culture on at least a weekly basis, and unmotivated employees. At the same time, I have friends and family who feel like their employers could care less about them. What gives?⁉ I'll admit, although I think there is something bigger at play worldwide, I'm not exactly sure what it is. For sure covid was an instigator (or at least an accelerant) and employees have been demanding more ever since. At the same time, some employers have truly been more proactive in pursuing employee engagement and well-being. But the decline has continued. Why? Rarely do I ever believe there is only one answer so please leave your thoughts about this in the comments below! I do believe, though, that there are two things that employers, leaders, and managers are missing when attempting to create a culture with fully engaged team members: proactively and intentionally developing a psychologically safe work environment, and, investing in and nurturing employee motivation. Yes, employers, leaders and managers can and should create and nurture these qualities and characteristics. I have seen clients turn their corporate culture around in less than a year by investing in and prioritizing these invisible forces that make or break a team. Q3 seems to be the time when people are handing in their notice (and the fourth most common month for resigning is January). They've had a break from work, maybe two weeks in the sun and they've come to the conclusion that this job really isn't a good fit any more. Is there anything that employers can do to hold onto talent? The short answer is yes, of course. But it won't be a quick fix. For people to feel good about their work they need autonomy, impact and the chance to grow.
