When FINMA people share their 30y + experience, the result is somewhat...dry: have a go at the document recently published "30+ years of financial crisis management – lessons learned and priorities for supervision" Main takeaways: 1. Financial crises often involve the banking sector and can spill over to the real economy. 2. Financial crises are more severe when banks are involved. 3. Need for Continuous Improvement: Regulation and supervision must adapt to innovation and the cyclical nature of financial markets. 4. Supervisors must identify problems in risk culture, governance, and business models early. Well, if that is not a surprise, I don't know what is...!
