Set to go into effect last Thursday, the increase on Chinese imports tariffs was delayed for two weeks, as announced by the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR). They are now under review, and a final determination is expected in mid-August. The tariffs would then become effective two weeks later. Said increase was announced in May, stating that the new higher tariffs on imports would be applied to ship-to-shore cranes, electric vehicles, lithium-ion EV batteries, steel, aluminum, semiconductor ships, solar cells, and medical products. The plan is to have them be phased in over the next three years, being electric vehicles, solar cells, steel, aluminum, and medical products, the cargo whose import tariffs would increase in 2024. +52 (81) 8174 8000 www.crossdock.mx #worldnews #chineseevs #chinesetariffs #chineseimports #airfreight #seafreight #internationallogistics #globaltrade

Biden Administration Unveils New Tariffs on Chinese Imports, Targets Green Technology Sector They found their cover-story: 'over-capacities!' In the escalating trade tensions between the United States and China, President Joe Biden is poised to escalate the conflict with the announcement of fresh tariffs on Chinese imports. These tariffs are specifically aimed at key sectors including electric vehicles (EVs), semiconductors, solar equipment, and medical supplies. The proposed tariffs, which could surge existing rates from 25% to a staggering 100%, underscore the Biden administration's determination to confront China's alleged manufacturing 'overcapacity,' particularly in the EV sector. This move comes amidst mounting concerns over China's dominance in the global EV market and its purported non-market practices. The announcement is scheduled for Tuesday. #TradeWar #BidenAdministration #Tariffs #China #GreenTechnology #EVs #Semiconductors #SolarEquipment #GlobalTrade

THE BULLY IN A CHINA SHOP What We’re Really Showing #WhatAreTariffs? Tariffs: the US government's inefficiency to produce anything useful. An ingenious method of slapping taxes on foreign goods to heroically defend domestic industries, micromanage international trade, or simply rake extra cash. #ChineseEVIndustry In a move that shocked absolutely no one, the U.S. cranked up tariffs on a slew of Chinese imports within the EV industry. Semiconductors? Taxed. Lithium-ion batteries? You bet. And those electric vehicles? A whopping 100% tariff—because why not? New tariffs also grace certain critical minerals, essential for making those semiconductors and battery parts we just can't seem to do without. #AbouttheTariffs Current tariffs for steel, aluminum, and personal protective equipment (PPE) hover between 0 to 7.5%. Oh, but let's not forget the thrilling history: 2019 saw tariffs at a majestic 15%, only to be mercifully halved to 7.5% by January 2020. | Imported Good | Current Rate | New Rate | Current Rate Implementation Year | New Rate | Electric vehicles | 25% | 100% | 2018 | 2024 | | Semiconductors | 25% | 50% | 2018 | 2025 | | Solar cells | 25% | 50% | 2018 | 2024 | | Syringes and needles | 0% | 50% | N/A | 2024 | | Some steel and aluminum products | 7.5% | 25% | 2019 | 2024 | | Lithium-ion EV batteries | 7.5% | 25% | 2019 | 2024 | | Lithium-ion non-EV batteries | 7.5% | 25% | 2019 | 2026 | | Battery parts | 7.5% | 25% | 2019 | 2024 | | Some personal protective equipment | 7.5% | 25% | 2019 | 2024 | | Rubber medical and surgical gloves | 7.5% | 25% | 2019 | 2026 | | Natural graphite and permanent magnets | 0% | 25% | N/A | 2026 | | Other critical minerals | 0% | 25% | N/A | 2024 | | Ship-to-store cranes | 0% | 25% | N/A | 2024 | #DataSources Remember, the 2019 tariffs initially soared at 15%, only to be tamed to 7.5% in the serene days of January 2020. Today's tariffs for steel, aluminum, and PPE range from a gentle 0% to a robust 7.5%. Ah, the joy of tariffs—bringing complexity and revenue, one imported good at a time.

The Biden Administration announced increasing tariffs on lithium-ion batteries imported into the US from China. How will power-equipment tool manufacturers respond to the new 25% tariff rate (up from 7.5%)? Well, they have a couple years to figure it out. The tariff hike on non-EV lithium-ion batteries is deferred until 2026, giving US (or other non-China) battery makers time to increase production. I will be reaching out to equipment makers like Echo, Ego, Greenworks and others to learn about their plans. https://lnkd.in/eQBNMV3X

Following the US, Canada will be issuing a 100% Tariff on Chinese EVs effective October 1st. As a result of alleged unfair trade practices, Canada will be launching a 100% tariff on Chinese-made EV imports as early as October 1st - this includes hybrids, trucks and buses. A 25% tariff on Chinese steel and aluminum is also set to take effect later in the month. Mary Ng, Canada's trade minister stated - “The measures are an important step towards ensuring Canadian workers and businesses can compete fairly. Global trade rules are not always adequate to protect against the type of non-market behaviour we have witnessed from China in this sector.” These tariffs echo similar efforts made in the USA. In May, a 100% tariff on Chinese-made EVs was issued. And in July, a 25% tax was issued on foreign-made steel imported through Mexico. Up until recently, China and other countries have been successful importing through Mexico to bypass tariffs. The Canadian government has accused Chinese manufacturers of running overcapacity policies while ignoring labor and environmental standards. Other manufacturing categories are now being investigated - Batteries, Semiconductors and Solar Products. U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai to Take Further Action on China Tariffs After Releasing Statutory Four-Year Review It's a start, but as I have previously said and additional 2 years (2026) for OEMs is great for consumers and OEMs, but will do nothing to resolve the graphite shortage as this will stifle investment for another 2 years. It takes 3 years to qualify your anode material for an OEM or Tier 1 battery manufacturer. It's great for STS as this gives us an additional 2 years to get materials into markets and solidify those commercial relationships. As the Report details, Ambassador Tai will propose the following modifications in strategic sectors: · Battery parts (non-lithium-ion batteries) - Increase rate to 25% in 2024 · Electric vehicles - Increase rate to 100% in 2024 · Facemasks - Increase rate to 25% in 2024 · Lithium-ion electrical vehicle batteries - Increase rate to 25% in 2024 · Lithium-ion non-electrical vehicle batteries - Increase rate to 25% in 2026 · Medical gloves - Increase rate to 25% in 2026 · Natural graphite - Increase rate to 25% in 2026 · Other critical minerals - Increase rate to 25% in 2024 · Permanent magnets - Increase rate to 25% in 2026 · Semiconductors - Increase rate to 50% in 2025 · Ship to shore cranes - Increase rate to 25% in 2024 · Solar cells (whether or not assembled into modules) - Increase rate to 50% in 2024 · Steel and aluminum products - Increase rate to 25% in 2024 · Syringes and needles - Increase rate to 50% in 2024 #SouthStar #graphite #Brazil #alabama #criticalmetals https://lnkd.in/eZudKPWa
