Hey everyone, as we go into the weekend, there are a few plastic-free July thoughts. Zero plastic is impossible to achieve, but disposing of it in the least harmful way is the next best thing. Let's focus on reducing our plastic footprint and recycling responsibly. Here are some simple steps you can take: 1. Recycle Smart: Plastic Bags: Most grocery stores, Target, and home improvement centers have plastic bag recycling including dry cleaning bags and clean produce bags. Plastic Plant Pots, Tags, and Trays: Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Walmart garden centers accept these items for recycling. You may be educating the employees…but look for the rack that says Metrolina. That grower drops plants off from those racks and takes back empty pots, etc. left on them for recycling. Polystyrene Recycling at The UPS Store: EPS or expanded polystyrene can be tough to recycle. Severna Park’s & Crofton’s UPS Store accepts it for reuse and recycling. Outside of this area? Check with your local UPS store. As #SustainabilityWeek continues, let’s consider the billions of plastic and plastic-lined cups that end up in landfill every year. Many plastics are non-recyclable, and there’s even less hope for your coffee cup, with its liquid-proof lining relegating it to the trash. Worse, incorrectly putting non-recyclable materials in the recycling bin can contaminate the whole batch. This #NoDisposableCupDay and every day, refuse single-use plastics and #RecycleResponsibly. Carry a personal cup if you have one – if not, a coffee mug will do. Another packaging post... These trays were introduced to minimise plastic waste - thin film removeable top plus had plastic base. When they first arrived, anyone could strip the top off, separate and recycle. #jobdone But same as the multi-material versions with cardboard base, something happend. Now the bond is so strong, I cant separate the layers, and I have strong hands! So now the whole lot goes into landfill! #unintendedconsequences #greenwashing #onestepforwardsTwostepsback

Looking for ways to reduce your plastic usage? There's heaps of things you can do to make a change (beyond using paper straws, which I have a personal vendetta against). I've been on a bit of a mission to reduce my plastic usage at home. Here are a few of the things I've done: - Switch from single-use hand soap bottles to hand soap tablets - Switch from single use laundry liquid to laundry sheets - Switch from single-use body soap bottles to powder sachets Just the above has already stopped me from buying many plastic bottles. Plus, it's fun to pretend I'm making the products from scratch, when really all I'm doing is adding water 👩🔬 There's definitely more I can do, but it's a start. Plastic Free ME: Simple changes to make a significant impact on reducing plastic waste? Switching to reusable water bottles. Our team has embraced this eco-friendly practice, even during team meet-ups at local cafés. Other ways include using reusable containers and utensils during onsite lunches and bringing our own bags for shopping. For those food items with plastic that can't be avoided at this time, it's good to know that there are soft plastic recycling points in supermarkets.
