Bendigo and Adelaide Bank is riding a seven-year high, with its stock up 27% so far this year, thanks in part to a successful digitisation and simplification drive. Some of Up Bank’s ethos has rubbed off on the parent company, says Up CEO Xavier Shay. “We can bring a tech lens, Bendigo brings a banking lens, how do we combine those two across the group?” he says of how the two companies learn from each other. “How do we deliver things even faster [at Up], and then how do we potentially feed some of that into the wider Bendigo group?” While Up is not yet a massive factor in Bendigo’s bottom line, it has been an important funnel of new customers to its parent company. This gave it the freedom to plan its future, allocate resources and focus on creation rather than legacy problems.   The fresh start has also enabled it to leverage the latest technologies — for example, it has constructed a cloud-based enterprise data warehouse, which collects data from all the bank’s core systems, to support advanced analytics projects and machine learning models develop highly specialised and innovative capabilities.   Dimitrios Kyparissis, CEO of Optima Bank, says receiving the Bank of the Year accolade for Greece after just four years of operation is a distinct honour. “It reflects our people’s hard work and dedication to meeting customers’ financial needs and ensuring an optimum banking experience. Our commitment remains to be Greece’s simple, flexible and contemporary bank,” he adds.   In 2022, Optima reported a 62% increase in Tier 1 capital, a 60% rise in assets and a whopping 322% jump in net profits.

Most folks don't realize that we've had a challenger that's been around since 1859 (and was started by 4 scrappy entrepreneurs). The fact that NBC isn't a "Big 5" means we can be more agile and streamlined in our approach. No silos. Less friction. I'm not a banker by trade. I'm on the side of everyone who demands better from our financial industry. After moving over from SVB last year, I can say that the culture here is absolutely in line with what Canadians need. I've never once heard "we don't do that". What I have heard a whole lot is "how can we do that? How can we get that done?". We're committed to being entrepreneurial and to serving the risk takers and builders who are trying to make Canada a place for innovation to thrive. We want to see big wins here, and we want to be part of them. You *might* have noticed that NBC was the only Canadian bank whose CEO spoke up on the 2024 Canadian budget, and more specifically, the proposed capital gains tax increase.
