🐕 Public Access: Detailed Insight into the Fifth Step of Our Candidate Assessment 🚪 Why Each Public Access Skill is Key: * Food Ignorance: Dogs learn to ignore food within reach (less than one foot away) for at least 5 seconds, teaching them to avoid distractions and maintain focus on their handler’s cues. * Sensory Confidence: Confidence through 10 different sensory experiences ensures dogs are well-prepared for the varied stimuli they’ll encounter in public spaces. * Elevator Comfort: Being happy to enter and exit a lift is crucial for dogs to assist handlers who navigate multi-story buildings. * Controlled Entrance/Exit: Demonstrating controlled entry and exit from buildings and vehicles shows that dogs can handle transitions smoothly, following their handler’s cues without rushing or hesitating. When you startle and intimidate a larger predator, you can temporarily reset their OODA loop and make them pause.  This is a scientific term called neophobia: fear of the unknown. Insight into Assistance Dog Organizations’ Assessment Practices Curiosity piques when considering the number of assistance dog organizations that openly share their assessment criteria for each stage of training and evaluation — beyond the standard Public Access Test. At Infinity Dogs CIC, we’ve set a precedent by detailing our Candidate level criteria on our facebook page. Should there be enough interest, we’re prepared to do the same for every level.
