I share this unfortunate incident to request each and every human being in this universe to simply take ownership & responsibility of the role they are in whether an employee, employer, parent, son, architect, engineer, swimming coach, lifeguard, etc. Preserve life - it's so short. While there is no expiry date, let's make it worth the while, while protecting it. In terms of the responsibility assigned, make sure you are qualified to handle the role, emotionally too. In this case, someone hired somebody - they had to fill the position (with unqualified personnel) & meet the demand & targets, the society empanelled a third party to take on this responsibility, the list goes on... To cite another example, randomly, the employer / parent needs to be sensitive to the employee / child & not make them work like a part of a machinery, that can keep going & going & going & going. Targets are important, but more important is the human life, & if not handled well will succumb to stress, anxiety, burnout, distress, trauma etc. Respect your employee / child - don't taunt them! You have no idea what harm you are causing. Do not take advantage of the position you are in - remember... What goes around comes around... One life - live & let live - be real not a puppet. I feel bad for the way the world has become so mechanical, let's become human again. 🙏 Stay Happy, Stay Healthy #ownership #responsibility #empathy ----------- 5-year-old boy drowns in Gurgaon's housing society swimming pool; guards were 'busy on phone' https://lnkd.in/gMGCED-m

Did the lifeguard do enough? One area that receives little attention in UK pool industry guidance and by operators is having a clear expectation around the minimum standard we expect from lifeguards when supervising the pool. We refer to it as the standard of supervision. The standard of supervision is context-dependent and multi-dimensional. It comprises what a lifeguard is expected to achieve (outcome dependant) and is typically non-prescriptive about how a lifeguard achieves it (means dependant). When a lifeguard's conduct is called into question, competing expectations of the minimum standard can prolong the resolution of disputes. This hurts all parties involved. It is in the interest of operators, training providers, members of the public and lifeguards to ensure a fair and equal standard is applied across swimming pools in the UK. It is a good topic to discuss with lifeguards and managers. Take the examples below and consider the extent of the lifeguard's duty. In what situations would the duty be fair? Can you think of situations where it would be an unfair expectation? ➡ A duty to intervene to prevent accidents. ➡ A duty to educate pool users on the safe use of the pool. ➡ A duty to scan the pool continuously. ➡ A duty not to leave the allocated lifeguard position. ➡ A duty to identify a drowning casualty. ➡ A duty to rescue pool users. A realistic, pragmatic, simple, and clear approach is what is needed. See our article for a suggested approach to defining a minimum standard for lifeguards.

The Importance of Water Safety: Tips for Parents As a parent, ensuring your child's safety is always a top priority. When it comes to water-related activities, such as swimming, this concern becomes even more paramount. Tragically, drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death among children, which highlights the critical importance of water safety education. At our swim school, we are committed to not only teaching children how to swim but also instilling in them a deep respect for the water and an understanding of fundamental safety principles. Here are some essential water safety tips for parents to keep in mind: Supervision is Key: Never leave your child unattended near any body of water, no matter how shallow it may seem. Constant adult supervision is crucial, as drowning can occur quickly and silently. Enroll in Swim Lessons: Formal swim instruction from a qualified instructor can equip your child with essential water survival skills, such as floating, treading water, and understanding water entry and exit techniques. Use Proper Safety Equipment: Ensure your child wears a well-fitted life jacket approved by the relevant safety authorities when participating in water-based activities, especially in open bodies of water like lakes or rivers. Establish Clear Rules: Set specific rules for your child regarding water safety, such as staying within designated areas, not running near the pool, and never swimming alone. Consistently reinforcing these rules will help ingrain them as habits. Learn CPR: As a parent, it's invaluable to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and be prepared to administer it in case of an emergency. This life-saving skill can make a significant difference in a critical situation. Secure Pools and Hot Tubs: If you have a pool or hot tub at home, ensure it is properly fenced and equipped with self-closing, self-latching gates to prevent unsupervised access by children. Teach Water Safety: In addition to swim lessons, educate your child about water safety concepts, such as recognizing potential hazards, understanding the importance of personal flotation devices, and knowing how to call for help in an emergency. By prioritizing water safety and instilling these principles in your children from an early age, you can help create a foundation of knowledge and awareness that will serve them well throughout their lives. Remember, water safety is an ongoing effort, and vigilance is key to preventing accidents. At Youth Aquatics, we are committed to partnering with parents to foster a love for swimming while emphasizing the utmost importance of water safety. Together, we can ensure that your child's experiences in the water are not only fun but also safe!

ATTENTION ALL POOL OWNERS - PRIORITISE YOUR POOL SAFETY THIS SEASON... 52% of all drownings in Australia happen in swimming pools. Children under five are the highest risk of unintentional fatal drowning. Sadly sixteen children drowned last year. For Check Your Pool Gate Month, we spoke with Deb Herde, a certified pool inspector. “A child drowning is something that never leaves you,” says Deb. “There’s no panic or big splashes to warn you something is wrong. When I was young, a neighbour lost their little one after a gate was propped open at a party. The dread and pain the family went through has never left me. It led me to be ardent about the prevention of home drownings. “Prevention is simple and effective, but with the rise of distractions in our lives families have become more casual about pool safety. We check our kid’s car seats nearly every day we put them inside a car, but when do we make time to check our pool safety?” Deb notices rental properties seem to be the most dangerous “It’s a landlord’s responsibility to ensure the pool area is safe. A tenant should complain immediately if they do not feel the area is safe.” Families without kids or older children can become blasé to the idea a friends child could enter the area, says Deb. Yet ‘unintentional entry’ into pools is the most common incident prior to a pool drowning. D&D Technologies conducted research with pool owners across Australia and discovered 25% of parents said children had accessed their pool area without supervision. Deb hopes to reduce drowning statistics by preventing unintentional entry with secure backyard pools and increasing our supervision of children in or near pool areas. “We have the stats on fatal drownings but know hundreds of near drownings, accidents, or emergencies also occur. We’re more distracted, put down your phone and always supervise your children in the pool!” AREAS WE NEED TO PRIORITISE FOR POOL SAFETY Maintenance matters: Check your gate safety all year: Do they close automatically? If you are a tenant do your own audit of the pool and its safety. Check Mates: Eighty-five per cent of survey respondents are worried about the safety of their children swimming in other people’s pools. Ask the questions Stay close: Have everything you need so you don’t need to go back and forth from the pool. Vigilance is key: Supervise at all times, get in the water. 30% of families have experienced a pool-related injury or emergency. Gate protocol: There’s no excuse to have a gate open. Our study found that 55% of pool owners prop open the gate to clean, get a towel or during a party! It’s a dangerous habit that could cause the accidental death or injury of a child or loved one. Let’s heed Deb’s urgent call, together, we can ensure a summer filled with memories free from the devastating impacts of pool-related accidents. Just minutes of your time can be life saving - https://lnkd.in/gU6y-9xU

Cheltenham week! So let's look at the links between Recruitment and Horse racing... 😅 1) Persistence is key. Anyone in recruitment knows the day job is filled with obstacles, its important to remain determined and overcome these hurdles... 2) Gambling It can always feel like a gamble leaving a long term role, for a new one. As a recruiter you must work hard to alleviate the candidates concerns and reiterate their reasons for leaving in the first place. The grass is greener in some places after all. 3) Competition is healthy Even if you are up against a few in the interview process, remain upbeat... the favourite doesn't always win (like El Fabioli yesterday) 😡Prepare properly and back yourself! Anymore debatable links between Recruitment and Horse racing? 😎

Let me be crystal clear...DEI is dangerous!! This is especially true when it comes to lifeguards and those who seek to work in emergency medical services. Just this morning I came across an employment ad posted by a Chicago recruiting firm that specializes in DEI. They are attempting to recruit lifeguards for the City of Brentwood, CA (near Antioch) however after all is said and done, they are requiring NO EXPERIENCE to work with children swimming. They are also not requiring candidates to demonstrate swimming ability or skills proficiency if already certified pool lifeguards. They also go on to say that any candidate that is not certified will be put through a Red Cross course which is only 24 hours. Digging deeper into the recruiting company, I came to the conclusion that if you are white and conservative, YOU WILL NOT GET PLACEMENT. Instead they want anybody with a heartbeat that checks all the diversity boxes. That's it!! Now, as a parent...would you want a highly proficient lifeguard watching your kids or do you want some individual who simply got the job because of the color of their skin and/or political party affiliation for example? DEI is already coming back to bite many in the ass!! DEI is DANGEROUS!!! #DEI #discrimination #lifeguard #lifeguards #politicalcorrectness
