Today it is two weeks since I was part of the Twitch #layoffs, with 500 of my colleagues. I’ve seen many awesome folks share posts like this in the last year, and I’m a believer that careers have chapters (short and long). So I’m philosophical even though it is a career-first to leave a job suddenly. I needed a bit to let go of projects I cared about and wanted to see through, and say goodbye to colleagues. I went to Twitch to develop my skills and serve a new-to-me community of people. I managed and worked with smart, passionate people who knew and loved the users they were there to support. I guided an updated approach to Youth Safety enforcement and helped integrate #SafetybyDesign process and principles into product development, including helping launch short form content/Twitch Stories and Content Classification Labels. I developed and applied my expertise on a broad range of policy issues, from Hate and Harassment to Suicide/Self-Injury, TVEC, Misinfo, NCII and GenAI and got to engage with a range of internal and external stakeholders as we crafted and updated our approach. Live content is serendipitous and intimate in good and bad ways. Detection, enforcement, expectations of privacy, use of language all look a bit different when someone hasn’t edited the content before upload. I already look back in gratitude on the experience I gained in tailoring my outputs and recommendations to the specific community, technology and resources available. I’ve been brainstorming about what I might do next. My experience spans Tech, Civil Society, Public Policy, Research/Academia but my focus has remained pretty consistent - building products, policies (regulatory and platform) and outreach strategies that help people more equitably access digital opportunities, while mitigating potential risks. I have experience in responsible product development, product and content policy, regulatory readiness (especially DSA, AADC, OSA, AVMSD, COPPA and similar), multi-method research, stakeholder engagement, human rights due diligence, impact evaluation, risk assessment/Safety by Design and Theory of Change development/strategic planning. That’s a solid list I hope, and I am cautiously optimistic about finding a way to contribute in my next role. But the job market is tough right now, so I’m also feeling uncomfortably vulnerable by making an ask - I’m grateful for any intros, leads on roles or consultancy or even just a friendly virtual chat/catch up with folks in my network. Huge and heartfelt thanks to those of you who have already reached out, I’m genuinely so grateful. I may not be the most in-demand mentor right now, but I will continue to offer Coffee Hours via the Trust & Safety Professionals Association (link ⬇ ). Now more than ever I want to be a resource to anyone else who has gone through a layoff, or just needs a sounding board as you consider your own next steps. We are in this together.

Director of Team Operations/Player Personnel /Coaching/ Innovator/Executive Director of CGS/ Public Speaking/ Seminar Training
Question to Hiring Managers in Sports and Business: If the mission of your team/company is to climb a tree, why do you consistently try to train horses instead of hiring squirrels? In my job search, this seems to be the case. Just curious.....

When I tell people I work as an account manager for a company that builds high-performance workstations and servers, I might as well tell them I watch paint dry for a living. Boring AF. My job title doesn't sound very interesting, but my days are filled with engaging conversations. Here are a few conversations I've had recently: *An avid fly fisher shared details about a recent fishing trip, and how he fishes to relieve stress. *A woman and I discussed our favorite ski resorts. I'm from Utah, and she tried one of the resorts I recommended last year. (Solitude) *A huge Minnesota Vikings fan and I discussed why his team and mine (Seattle Seahawks) may or may not make the playoffs this year. *I took a customer to lunch, and we discussed why old games like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time are better than many games today. Sure, I better sell a few computers along the way. But honestly, that's the least interesting part of my job. Sharing. Connecting, Learning. Listening. Connecting with another human is the best part of the job because it doesn't feel like a job. Sometimes, the technical discussions should take a back seat.

Who would have thought that managing a racquet clubs would lead me to a career in staffing? 4 years ago, I was the General Manager at tennis and pickleball club, overseeing everything from membership sales, programming, leading teams, coaching, to facility operations. While it was an incredibly rewarding experience, the idea of finding new ways to challenge myself and making an impact excited me. November of 2021, my daughters were 16 and 8 months when I started with Aquent. Stepping into the unknown, a new industry, a 100% commission role, a new company, all of which I knew nothing about.. The negative thoughts - “is this the right time”, “what if I can’t afford daycare”, what if I’m not good enough to make it” Yes, we all have limiting beliefs, but something about jumping off the deep end and facing fear in the face was worth it. The positive thoughts - “what if I can provide more for my family”, “what if I can do this”, “what if this increases my ceiling of growth” I’ve never been one to measure success on a linear path. I’d be lying to say that the shift has been seamless but, a decision I’ll never regret. Fast forward a 3 years, my family has grown, Helena (4) Mia (3) Luca (2). I've transitioned from a General Manager for Luxury Racquet Clubs, to a Direct Hire Consultant, and now a Client Partner at Aquent. I’ve grown and learned more in these last few years than I did in my prior 8 years playing is safe, wondering, "If I should make a change" This journey wouldn't have been possible without the lessons I learned in my previous roles, my friends / family, and a company that saw beyond the bullet points on my resume.
