We just watched the movie Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks, offers an intense dramatic portrayal of real-life events, but it also provides valuable insights into the complexities of global supply chains. This is important work that needs to deliver. Kudos to those working this. Our merchant marine cadre is withering away. The solutions might not be found from within. New ideas are required. We don’t have 6 years to start recruiting more high schoolers to maritime academies - that’s one important element - but we need far more - Like a much simpler path for USN and USCG to convert to the merchant marine. Just for starters. For another - simplify the unbelievably complex mariner credentialing maze - it’s ridiculously hard to navigate which credentials are legal for what purpose. Mariners spend far too much time dealing with their licensing overhead versus doing their jobs. #dreambigger
