As bad as MSC's plan to lay up 17 ships sounds....in terms of keeping the grey hulls moving, I'd keep the two proposed UNREP vessels, but what good to the day-to-day operations of the Fleet are the expeditionary sea bases / fast transports anyway? Personally do not understand why the Navy / MSC continues to churn out and man those platforms instead of oilers/ammo/stores replenishment ships?

I could not agree more with this assessment! The shortage of qualified Maritme Workforce both ashore in the Shipyards and crew on US flagged Vessels (both merchant and Navy) needs to be focused on and addressed.

HMNZS Manawanui Loss: After her recent grounding and sinking, the Sea Heritage Foundation sends our heartfelt condolences to the Royal New Zealand Navy, the crew, and the families of HMNZS Manawanui. A ship is much more than welded steel and machinery. It is a home, a workplace, and a vessel much loved by its crew. Naval ships crews are highly trained professionals, as clearly demonstrated by the safe evacuation of the whole crew from the ship in what would have been very challenging conditions at night in close proximity to the reef, in darkness, with weather adding another level of risk to manage. The burden of command is ever present; BZ to Commander Yvonne Gray RNZN for her leadership under extreme circumstances and the rest of the command team and crew for their swift actions under pressure, which saved lives. In situations like this, there are many elements to consider. Unfortunately, too many experts like to offer their opinions without knowing all the facts. Let the Navy conduct its investigation and communicate its outcome before jumping to unfounded conclusions. This will ensure a comprehensive understanding of the incident.

The Nation requires three ARG/MEUs like the one described in the news story below on patrol 24/7/365. These organizations deter and minimize conflict and can respond to crisis with greater agility and more lethality than any CONUS based response force. Two of these ARG/MEUs are needed to cover the INDOPACOM AOR and another one in the Mediterranean in support of EUCOM/CENTCOM/AFRICOM. To do this the USN need to build 40 amphibious assault ships (12 LHD/LHA; 26 LPDs; and 2 CC ships). The CC ships should be the first two LHAs without well decks which would give the ATF Commader great flexibility in C2 and strike options. The USN also needs to maintain these ships at the 80% availability rate which is part of the optimized fleet response plan. The Marines are ready, how about the Navy?

These mariners, operating under the US flag, have bravely navigated treacherous waters to deliver vital supplies amidst escalating hostilities. Houthi militants have launched numerous assaults on US merchant vessels, aiming to disrupt critical maritime routes and intimidate those who dare to ensure the flow of essential goods. ⏳ Historically, Merchant Mariners have never received the same recognition as US Navy sailors. However, previous secretaries have awarded Merchant Marine Expeditionary and other medals to those in combat zones. These recognitions are crucial as they unlock federal burial benefits and are the first step for Merchant Mariners injured or killed in action to obtain VA benefits. Buttigieg’s refusal to issue awards, or even to take five minutes to thank these mariners in a video address, is denying them their hard-earned benefits.
